Satyricon & Munch, June 10th

2022-06-09 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 20 Comments
Norwegian black metallers Satyricon have announced that their new album, Satyricon & Munch, will be available for streaming tomorrow, June 10th, with physical copies to follow in the near future. Satyricon & Munch was produced for an exhibition at Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, which honors the renowned Norwegian artist Edvard Munch.

Band comments:
"It is release week and this is the front cover of the new Satyricon album. As communicated previously, this is the music from the exhibition Satyricon & Munch, currently on at the Munch museum in Oslo, Norway. This album is a consequence of the making of an art exhibition, but it became clear to us during the process, that the music in itself stands on its feet and therefore we also decided to make it into an album. So purpose made, yet with the unconditional ability to live its own life, and hence you will be able to enjoy it on all streaming platforms worldwide from June 10th.

Manufacturing time on physical products is extreme these days, so we are unable to give you a definite date on that, but the record company is preparing a wide variety of formats available to preorder simultaneously with the digital release on Friday.

Lots of information will follow on the album in the next few days, so stay tuned."

for as much funny and weird shit this band has said and done (lets be honest its basically just Satyr who is the meme/funny dude) you gotta kinda admire that they just do whatever they want with their musical direction

with that said, the last album was pretty weak aside from like two tracks and even those good tracks (to your brethren in the dark, for example) very repetitive.

This band's material has been straight-up garbage after Nemesis Divina. Expectations very low.

That's so wrong. "Now, Diabolical" is especially strong, but I kinda liked "Deep Calleth Upon Deep" too. But the s/t was garbage.

It's just an hour instrumental right? It's not Black Metal at all, it's okay, not what I had hoped for but oh well.

Just under an hour. Quite cinematic so far, lots of ebb, some flow.

Well, then I believe I should listen to it ASAP. Maybe a review too if it's interesting enough.

Satyr is like the Steven Wilson/Trent Reznor of black metal

I really liked the direction of Rebel Extravaganza and Volcano but then he just totally stripped out all of the interesting electronic and atmospheric embellishments from future releases. Listen to the intro of Mental Mercury, they haven’t come close to capturing that type of intensity since. The worst thing this band ever did was write Fuel For Hatred, because he’s been trying to write an album of that track ever since and failing. I’ve read some of his interviews, he has delusions of grandeur about cracking the mainstream.

This should have been a far "braver" release, imo. It's quite okay, but lacks some sort of spark, or climax - feels like it's only halfway done... The original idea is good, but the execution is very shallow.
