R.I.P. Atsushi Sakurai 2023-10-24 by discovolante | 26 Comments | Atsushi Sakurai, the skilled and charismatic vocalist behind one of Japan’s longest running rock bands, BUCK-TICK, has passed away on October 19th from a brain hemorrhage.
Started when the members were still in high school, BUCK-TICK are known to be one of the country’s most versatile and enduring rock bands, with 2023 having been the group’s 40th anniversary. One of the band’s biggest signatures were the rich vocals of Sakurai, with the ambiguous visual style of the band, particularly Sakurai, being extremely influential in the creation of visual kei, one of Japan’s most popular musical subgenres during the 90s.
One of the group’s most popular singles was “Dress”, originally released in 1993 and re-released in 2005, being featured in the popular anime series Trinity Blood, helping to garner BUCK-TICK a passionate international following. Sakurai also collaborated with some members of the iconic industrial band KMFDM during the limited 2001 project Schwein.
Atsushi Sakurai was only 57 years old.

| | | What the fuck
Absurdly talented performer, shocked and devastated to hear this. RIP
| | | RIP
| | | Without Buck-Tick, I wouldn't be who I am today.
I wouldn't have met so many good friends over the years.
I wouldn't have met my partner.
I wouldn't have gone to Japan this year.
I wouldn't have gotten so many irreplicable memories and art.
I'm sure many Sput users here have a artist which if they passed away, it represents an end of an era for their life. Well, this is mine.
I want to escape to the past, but I can't. I am just happy I got to see them live in person before he passed and was a part of sharing their legacy to people. They made me a better person.
God fucking speed Sakurai.
| | | Definitely not what I expected to find out this morning and I am very saddened by this. Hard R.I.P.

| | | Without hyperbole an all-time great frontman. Gone way too soon. He left a legacy most of us could only dream of achieving. His work and vast influence will live on, but this has me fucked up man. Huge RIP. No one will ever do it like he did
| | | 57 is too young. Im heartbroken.

| | | RIP
| | | whaaaat so sudden, this sucks
| | | What a bummer for his family and band members. RIP.
| | | Huge RIP, legendary band and artist
| | | Still at a loss for what to say. I took so much inspiration from this guy, his stage presence, the inflections and cadences of his voice were so informative in me developing as a singer. I have vivid memories as a teenager of watching him performing "Kiss Me Goodbye" on youtube and just being completely drawn in by everything he was doing. I wouldn't be anywhere near as confident behind a microphone if it wasn't for this guy.
We'll always love you Atsushi, Rest in Peace.
| | | I literally opened sputnik cuz i forgot this site existed and this was the first thing I saw on the news, I literally screamed no out loud like 5 times, Atsushi is such a huge influence on my singing. Probably the first musician to pass away where I'm on the verge of crying.
I'm so angry.
| | | never got into em but i know they have a deserved cult following so big rip and condolences to the die hard fans
| | | RIP
