This is an album I am surprised that nobody has reveiwed yet. This is the second album in the three uber-depressing and influential album trilogy of Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers. It was released in '89 and off the album came two minor hits (with "Lovesong" and "Lullaby"). This album shot very high on the charts, doing much better than the Cure's other albums. This album has it all, the genuis bass lines, Robert's vocals, the catchy keyboards, and the floaty guitar riffs. If you have any respect for Post-Punk, Goth, or New Wave music this is a must-have.
The Cure at this time:
Robert Smith (vocals, guitar)
Simon Gallup (bass)
Boris Williams (drums)
Porl Thompson (guitars)
Roger O'Donnell (keyboards)
Lol Tolhurst (other)
1. Plainsong - this song starts off really quiet so that you can't hear anything. Then you can faintly hear chimes and bells. The comes a loud blast and it leads into the album. In this song Robert's vocals are echoed very much so it's hard to hear him, which adds to the song.
2. Pictures Of You - this song starts off with a medium-length intro with a very nice bass part, then leads into the verse. This is a song that you can bawl your eyes out to if you want to.
3. Closedown - starts off with another lengthy intro (which is good) and very nice bass. what the Cure tends to do on this album is add in a catchy guitar or keyboard part as the intro goes along like in this song. The lyrics are very well-done and sad too.
4. Lovesong - this song is one of the more short song on the album. It is rather sad too (like all the other songs on here). The intro is a lot quicker and Robert's vocals are great.
5. Last Dance - I really enjoy this song every time I hear it. It starts off with really cool guitar and then comes the keyboards and bass. This is a very cool intro. Robert's singing and lyrics on this song are just genuis also.
6. Lullaby - the intro to this song is very cool and faster than other on the album. The lyrics are very interesting and the singing is whispered which is very cool.
7. Fascination Street - I really like Simon's bass part on this song. It is overall one of the more upbeat songs on the album but this does not affect it. Robert's singing is very cool in here, I like the lyrics too (like on every other song).
8. Prayers For Rain - This is one of the more lengthy and mopey songs on the album. The intro is depressing in itself, but then comes the singing which gives the full emotional effect. The keyboard in this song is very memorable too.
9. The Same Deep Water As You - this is a very lengthy song (9:22) and also very sad, which is always good for the Cure. It starts off with thunder striking, which is a really cool effect for this album. Then comes the signature lengthy intro, then goes into the vocals. On this song Robert sounds especially sad and longing. It has a sort of simple and catchy guitar and keyboard part too.
10. Disintegration - as this album goes, it gets more depressing, which I'm sure they did on purpose. This song starts off with a more upbeat intro, and the whole song is very much depressing. The singing is truly emotional, and i love it.
11. Homesick - This starts off with some really slow and cool piano. The intro goes on for a while, then comes the singing. Robert's singing in this song sound especially good with the jazzy piano behind it. The piano adds much emotion to the song.
12. Untitled - this starts off with a really slow and cool keyboard part then breaks into the rest of the intro with some drums, guitar, and bass. The guitar is the intro is very catchy. I also really enjoy the lyrics to this song. And Robert is a plain genius singer. This is probably one of my favorites off the album. A great ending.
NOTE: You will sob your eyes out during this album.
Overall, this album is so wonderfully, wonderfully genius. I give it a:
5/5
