Dillinger Escape Plan is the weirdest, most chaotic band that I've ever heard. I hate hardcore metal, but after what people here on the forums had to say about this disc, I decided to pick it up. To me, the biggest problem with the cd is it's length. Under 40 minutes? wtf? I didn't pay 15 bucks for a little over half an hour of music. The quality of this music, however, makes up for any length issues. It sounds random, like complete, unrelenting chaos at first. I had to listen to it alot to actually find any music, but once you realize the kind of rhythms and whatnot that they use, it's amazing. Very technical playing, but not blatantly obvious technicality. Each of these songs is rather short, but manages to pack in more variety, raw talent, and time changes than alot of bands have in their whole careers. That being said.....

1. Sugar Coated Sour: It starts off with what Nacho described as "Carnival-like Beeping". It's actually a very, very fast guitar lick. It's a whole string of notes that sounds like one, insane. Almost immediately, the barrage starts. The music is loud, brutal, and unrelenting from about 4 seconds in. After awhile, it calms down for a moment, and you think you're in for a break from the insanity....WRONG. It just comes right back and tears your face off! This music gets me pumped for violence! RRAAAHH!!!!
5/5

2. 43% Burnt: This is my favorite song on the cd. It starts off with an unforgettable riff, and when the screaming begins, there is an undeniable groove there. guitar is insane once again, and the drummer is going mad. This is one of the few songs where I can actually understand the lyrics. The guitar only plays a few riffs, but changes time signatures and keys etc. so much that it sounds like a lot of different parts.
5/5

3. Jim Fear: Ok, this song grabs you right from the throat about a millisecond into it. The song actually has hooks, and it got stuck in my head the day I got this cd. Eventually there's a Beethoven-sounding part, then one of my favorite riffs of all time. It sounds like it's constantly changing, only it's always the same, the drummer just blows my mind.
5/5

4. *#..: Wierdest song title of all time. This starts off with a voice over an intercom, and you can tell right then that this is actually going to be a calm track. Who would guess? Actually, giong beyond calm, this is more of an ambience song than anything. the drummer does song repetitive symbal crashes, and the guitar steadily grows louder. Not heavy at all, but there is a definite feeling of unease.
4.5/5

5. Destro's Secret: This is chaos at its best! Insane is the only adjective I can think of to describe it. You have to hear it for yourself. Weirdness abounds.
4/5

6. The Running Board: Definitely has a very cool riff near the beginning. You can understand some lyrics here, which is very good. Eventually it goes into a calm, dark groove. Very cool.
5/5

7. Clip The Apex....Accept Instruction: This song is......intermittent. Best word I can think of here...it seems to not be very constant, but disjointed kind of....bah my description sucks. Listen to it yourself.

8. Calculating Infinity: This is instrumental. A very cool groovy thing is going on at the beginning, with the guitat/drums interplay. It's calm after that, and actually quite pretty. A nice reprieve.
5/5

9. 4th Grade Dropout: And after that break...back to the insanity. The vocals, guitar, and drums do the same thing here, while still doing rhythm...insane. The instruments repeat the same part for a while here, but it doesn't really get old.
4/5

10: Weekend Sex Change: This song starts out with very good, though slightly show-offy, drumming. The guitar is doing a calm, peaceful part...and then you take the plunge. A low piano note sends the listener into ambience land. They actually have strings here:eek: I was surprised by this song, it sounds so dark, so evil, so menacing, yet it doesn't have to be heavy and angry to do so.
5/5

11. Variations on a Cocktail Dress: The final song, and longest, at almost 8 minutes. To be honest, by this point the insanity was getting a bit boring. They should try making more soft, ambient songs on their albums, they're quite good at it.
4/5

Overrall, this is the only hardkore I like. I was surprised by its goodness, and continue to rock out to its sweet jams:thumb:

4.5/5

I'm thinking about checking this out. I like the EP they did with Mike Patton, but I don't think their normal stuff is like that. I don't normally like hardcore, but from the sounds of your review I might still like this...

Oh and good review.

I've heard so many good things about this band... perhaps I'll pick up this album.

If it's no good, I'm comin' for YOU.

Its cool. DEP is so weird, yet awesome.

And, and quit bitchin' about the length. Darkness Descends is 35 minutes, RiB is 29 minutes, and some grindcore albums are only a few minutes long :p

I hope no one minds the bump, just thought I'd give another review, song by song. I really don't feel like rating the instrumentals, because they feel like song connecters for the most part.

1. Sugar Coated Sour - An amazing track. There's actually a lot of semblance here: some 4/4 sections, the catchy-yet-heavy chorus, the awesome ending. It's the perfect blend of technicality and chaos. And Kaden's right, that guitar lick is insane; my band's guitarist is still working it out so we can cover it. 5/5

2. 43% Burnt - It's a tie with the first track for the most noticeable song on the album. A great intro/outro... just perfection as far as that goes. A very cool jazz break to showcase the guitarists' talents, tons of musical motifs; just an altogether great track. 5/5

3. Jim Fear - This is one of those crazy tracks that resolves itself by being awesome. The first half is really heavy and fast, difficult to latch onto anything specific. Still, once it gets to its breakdown that slams into a pummeling palm mute/high note switchoff, it becomes another album highlight. The end has also grown on me. 4.5/5

5. Destro's Secret - This song also grew on me. The guitars are so spastic and crazy in the beginning that I have trouble keeping up. Another interlude in this one that leads into a great heavy section, sort of reminiscent of "Jim Fear"s palm mute section, keeps the track alive. 4/5

6. The Running Board - They knew what they were doing when they brought this over from their last album. This one has the best interlude of any of the songs, and a fantasticly epic ending; it climaxes perfectly, and everything that was just maddening about the song comes together. Brilliant. 5/5

7. Clip The Apex... Accept Instruction - This song was odd to me at first, but it's now my favorite track on this album. It's sort of proof that this type of music tests its listener to the fullest. I'd say the big highlights of this track are the insane, harmonizing guitar parts halfway through, as they switch off with the vocals, and the big climax after that section that ends up degenerating into a noisy ending. The ending goes into the instrumental, so I can't fault it. 5/5

9. 4th Grade Dropout - I dislike this song the most. It feels anti-climactic... the end just doesn't work, failing to provide the resolution that this song desperately needs. The beginning is just way too off-kilter to manage to be memorable, which is rare for DEP. 2/5

11. Variations On A Cocktail Dress - This one is still growing on me. It's probably the most violent song on the album, just punishingly heavy. Unlike what Kaden said, the actual track isn't that long, there's a dumb filler track at the end that's just a sound byte. I think it's still a good song, just not a highlight. 3/5

I'd give the album a 4/5. Definitely a turning point in its genre, and a fantastic album altogether.

This album will be mine...very soon. I saw DEP live twice, and they are not hardcore in my opinion. They have their own musical style. That's a rarity in heavy music these days.
If you buy something from DEP. Only buy this full length. None of their other crap is worth it because the rest of it IS crap. And so is their new sound, it sucks so bad. Nothing like DEP at all.
Well obviously it is like DEP since it is them, but certainly they're sound has changed a lot. I still like the new stuff. And this album is really good, one of the better heavier bands out there. I like the uniqueness of it.

Both reviews were good too, two of them helps a little more.

The great part about this CD, is that none of the songs ever get old IMO. I've listened to this CD so many times and love more and more each time. My favorite songs are the running board/sugar coated sour. Can't go wrong with those two. 4.5/5 for the CD.

The fact that any of you (even Kaden) are associating this with hardcore is kind of silly.

Where I come from DEP and all the bands that sound like them ARE hardcore. It leads me to much genre debate over MX since, other than hardcore, I wouldn't know what to call these guys.

SD - It is easy to associate this with hardcore so long as you make note that it is not normal hardcore and is very pregressive.
