| OmairSh Heya Snowdog, how've you been? Long time. Hope all is well during these crazy times. :-) I have an album that I have a feeling you might enjoy :-). Pakistani Jazz/Prog rock fusion. There are youtube links in my first comment if you want a taste of it https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/81310/Mekaal-Hasan-Band-Andholan-Special-Edition/
| Jethro42 Hello Snowdog, 3 candidates left for a new prog tournament. Are you in?
| manosg Glad to see the love for An Ancient Muse, Snow!
| manosg Thank you, Snow! Wishing you all the best as well my friend!
| manosg Hey Snow, what is up? It seems that the album was already in the Live section, I just added the artwork. Thanks!
| Friday13th Prog tourney this Monday, Memorial day!
| manosg That's awesome, Snow. Love The Magician's Birthday, but experiencing July Morning live has to be an incredible experience.
| manosg Hey Snow, what's up? How was the Uriah Heep gig? Also, loving that Alternative 4 rating.
| Voivod Well, this link is merely one out of (too) many. I usually google "_insert_country_name abbreviation" and pick whatever link suits me.
| Voivod For standard country abbreviations, it's best that you prefer ISO-Alpha 3 codes - http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/country_code_list.htm
| Voivod Also, for same name band additions, be sure to use the proper country abbreviation, for example for Sweden it is SWE
| Voivod Ok I will the Candle page I uploaded, thanks for the heads up.
| manosg That's awesome man! Never managed to see Uriah Heep live but watching Mick Box live is like being close to a living part of rock history. It's also nice to see that you reviewed Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. Will definitely read it, I'm sure it's great.
| Friday13th Cool, man. That's a fairly specific gift to receive haha. Yeah, I've been a big fan since Mirror of Souls came out. I met Matt and the guys at a show about 5 years ago, and it really impacted me knowing Matt is just an average dude with a day job, yet his music hits me as hard as any rockstar. I was inspired to start writing my own music. I know they put a lot into every album, but we can sure hope for a sooner release than every 5 years!
| manosg Hey Snow, what's up? I know you're always in a jazz mood so if you haven't already checked Buddy Rich - The Swinging Buddy Rich give it a try. Buddy is a brilliant drummer.
| Friday13th Hey man, if you have time to jam a couple more prog albums, we need an arbiter for M6 which is in a 8:8 tie. Would appreciate it!
| Jethro42 Hey man! There is a new Sputnik prog tournament you might find interesting:http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=177103
| manosg Good morning, Snow! That's pretty awesome, man. Bobby is a beast, he can definitely play. And having to fill Mark Zonder's shoes, I guess it's not easy at all. I've only met The Gathering and a couple of guys from Rotting Christ, all cool people too. It's really nice when you get to know these guys and they're humble because I'm sure this is not always the case haha.
| manosg Hey Snow! Yes, I jammed both of them and they are awesome. Even though they require multiple listens in order to be fully appreciated, I found them excellent as background music while working too.
| manosg Awesome! I'll start checking some of those and let you know.
| manosg I'm leaning towards chill, Latin and folk. Maybe one of each so I can check all three styles :)
| manosg Thank you Snow, you're too kind! I see you've checked a few jazz albums lately. How about 2-3 recs for someone who is unfamiliar with the genre?
| Sowing Sure thing, the extra 5 are gone
| Sowing Well s***. Not sure if it was a glitch or if I fat-fingered something, but all the albums and the jazz tag were eliminated in addition to the excess band entries. I apologize; you'll need to re-submit the albums and the jazz tag. Let me know if you need anything pushed through for approval.
| TheMagicalBlender Out of everything you named on my list, the only thing I listened to was Dimension Hatross, and that album is awesome.
| ConcubinaryCode So I looked it up and I guess the album I "reviewed" did actually chart at 43. I never really pay attention to the charts though. I think bands have found more popular venues like bandcamp.com to get their music to fans from them directly. I also realized insipid and dull are basically the same thing but I blame the bad music I've been listening to for dumbing me down =p
| ConcubinaryCode Naw I'd never equate listening to any album willingly as torture. It was just incredibly insipid and dull. I'd never listen to anything like it if it wasn't for the little series I'm doing.
| ConcubinaryCode Hey, thanks. No but I did listen to a bit of monotheist and thought it was ok. I've never been too big on thrash metal though.
| ConcubinaryCode The albums I'm going to listen to are in the original search for the worst list but I can't say I remember if Kenny G is in it.
| CalculatingInfinity Death was really midpaced without being dirgy so it was an odd juxtaposition that didn't work and the other track they've far better tracks like that on Ire.
| CalculatingInfinity I need too but I kinda can't be bothered, the 2 songs that came out really put me off.
| Jasdevi087 Yeah Id it cause it wasn't much more accurate than the first one. Therangeplace has just moved forums and we've restarted a lot of our threads. I'll remake the list some day, just waiting on the Mike Patton thread to get restarted.
| Friday13th Thanks for the heads up. I am most certainly interested in the new Seven Impale!
| manosg Glad you enjoyed it! A great rating for Wizard - Odin as well. Not a lot of people are aware of Wizard on here, quite underrated band.
| manosg Hey Snow, hope all is well. I'm just jamming this album and I have a feeling that you'll enjoy it. Vinnie Moore - The Maze.
| Gwyn. lolllllll, oh man, I can't believe I didn't catch that. Well my name didn't start out as a Dark Souls reference so that's to my credit (Gwynbleidd was my starting name, reference to the witcher, but I shortened it just because everyone called me gwyn). Anyway, truth be told I haven't played the game in a while, but well, off the top of my head I would recommend Ornette Coleman's "Skies of America". Pretty thunderous and epic, would probably fit pretty well during DS boss fights
| Gwyn. uhhhh your four lords? that the name of the game? I don't think I've heard of that one if that's the case, I would need you to link me to some gameplay of it so I can get an idea of the feel of the game and rec something accordingly
| manosg Definitely, Snow. I've been revisiting his whole discog and Trilogy might be my favorite at the moment. I'm one of those rare cases where I consider his debut just ok even though I appreciate it for what it is. Truth is that the man has released a lot of quality material but people consider him just a showoff because they haven't checked his more song-oriented albums.
| Sowing No worries it's all taken care of!
| Jethro42 It's my pleasure, dude. I assume Animals as Leaders are metal:) I only know them by the name. While you talk about Brubeck, I'm listening to their version of Take Five atm. Man it delivers. I haven't heard Panzerballett in years, but the more energetic passages of Seven Impale made me think of them rightly or wrongly. I'm glad to showing you a new band. Take a look at their discog. You won't regret it. Cheers!
| Titan amazing record indeed brotherman!
| Friday13th oh, and send me a short blurb on why you like the album
| Friday13th COOL! Yeah I'll put you down for the Seven Impale album. Remember to jam each match for the week. You've missed two matches so far, but if you catch up by the end of the eighth match you can vote for the elimination rounds.
| Friday13th Hey man, would you like to have a contesting album in the prog contest? One user is dropping out. Read the rules in the first comment of my "Preliminary" list and let me know ASAP.
| Gwyn. I have not listened to any Sanders (nevermind the albums that he's featured, I'm talking only the ones to his name) besides those two, though I believe I might just agree. Glad you enjoyed it, don't let it stop at Sanders either! And I'm planning on doing more in the future (Don't know when though), hope you'll find more stuff to submerge in :)
| CusmanX1 I noticed just now that you were the guy who commented on my Pat Metheny list!
| CusmanX1 Yes, it's the same for me. "Clair de Lune" is personally my favourite piece ever, but Suite Bergamasque is amazing too. if I voted classical music should I give too many 5.
| Titan i pretty much agree, although TOT and SC are my least favorite....I'd take the new one over both of those
| Titan new DT pretty good imo
| Britch2tiger Thanks for another handy suggestion. Having second thoughts about another 2-album list if to include double albums from ACTIVE bands. There are a few I've tracked but am hesitant to add them, or include them on a (future) Triple Album List.
| Britch2tiger Much appreciation for your Scared Blade suggestion. Will be sure to include that album in a future One Album Band list.
| jelzel23 Atheist was really interesting.Piece of time and unquestionable presence were great records. The only thing that i dont like about them is that their vocals and their technicity sometimes it gets tiring. But anyway great band good recommendation. Also 90s Death was great (symbol is the best)
| Jasdevi087 Yeah, I may as well listen to Imaginary Soniscapes when I get around to it.
| Lord(e)Po)))ts no porblem bud, have u heard Fanfare Ciocarlia? if not check their album Queens and Kings
| jelzel23 yeah fates warning were great band ,i focus this time more on prog metal bands and i like more dream theater, queensryche and opeth do you have some other recommendations from this genre?
| bnelso55 Yeah. I hope so, but that's a tall order. Theirs is one of the best debut albums I've heard. It's so solid.
| bnelso55 It's true. That track is a great culmination of everything they offer with that album. Plus, that final riff at the end is huge! It's looking like they may have a new record coming out next year some time. That's something to be excited for!
| bnelso55 Ha! Glad to meet a fellow fan! What a fantastic band, and yet I can't recall having seen them mentioned in any discussion on this site. City of the Sun's bookend long-players are obvious standouts, but man, there really isn't a bad song on the whole album. I seriously dig the shifting moods and Crimson-esque dynamics of "Extraction". What about you? Do you have a top track?
| Friday13th NICE! Yeah "Ludgwig Von Byron" is like the best song ever right
| jelzel23 you were right Disipline is awesome ...it was madness and those basslines dude ,definetely is going to be on the top albums of 1981
| jelzel23 i will check it and i will tell you my opinion
| jelzel23 True that i forgot signals in my list ...great record thanks for reminding me that one
| Friday13th I think you'll dig this. Check Klaus Schulz's X if you haven't. It's pretty long, but it's probably the best fusion of classical with electronic I've heard.
| Ebola Todd La Torre is the man.
| Ebola I'm glad you like it too! Will probably review it this weekend or something.
| Friday13th Oh yeah, I'm a huge fan of Gillan of course, but also Jesus Christ Superstar in general. I got to see the movie actor Ted Neeley at a live performance and got to meet him later at a special movie showing in my town. He gave everyone a hug! The guy is so nice it hurts haha
| manosg I had a hard time rating the album because I felt a 3.5 was too low and a 4 a bit high. But a double album that good at this point of their careers is a serious feat. Plus Dickinson still obliterates most heavy metal singers even at this age. Empire of the Clouds is a bit of a grower for me as I initially felt it was not adventurous enough for a track that long. But I'm starting to enjoy it more and more.
| Torontonian oh, and another rec if you're interested is Nara Leao-Dez Anoz Despois. Amazing bossa nova since you dig getz/gilberto.
| Torontonian nice man, pretty much any of his solo albums up to 1962 are worth checking. My favorites being moonbeams, interplay, and intermodulation. I think he is probably my favorite jazz pianist.
| Torontonian well I certainly feel like J.Alex.. takes a lot of influence from him (in a good way). So If you dug his album then you'd definitely dig B.E as a solo artist. Give "Everybody digs Bill Evans" a listen!
| Torontonian Agreed. ITs definetly safe to assume he'll only grow as an artist with age. Definetly interested to see what direction he'll go in. On a similar note, do you dig Bill Evans?
| Torontonian thanks! Before i heard it i was really skeptical due to his age, but damn he plays incredibly well.
| Friday13th Nice! Yeah, this Rush tour was just the greatest.
| Friday13th Hey dude, oh Rush and Priest were both amazing. Totally different experinces. With Rushes I sat pretty far back with my dad and bro just soaking in the prog. Great set. Then Priest was with my friend and I up front banging our heads. A bit more of a visceral experience :D You get a chance to see either?
| Frippertronics Thanks man, and yeah the band will never be the same. I hear they're still obligated to tour until 2016 (which the tour will be for Fragile and Drama - the latter really bums me out for two reasons, the bass work on that album is solid and the Heaven and Earth line-up botched Tempus Fugit on Cruise to the Edge last year so I'm very afraid as to how it will sound without Chris at the helm.)
| Frippertronics I've just been in the mood lately, and the selection is rather thin at the moment where I'm at. Though checking the local goodwill won't hurt to try
| Frippertronics yeah, i've owned a copy on vinyl for a few years and finally got back to it and just decided to rate all the classical I have in my collection today
| OmairSh Hey Snow, I also wanted to recommend Leprous' latest album. Quality modern prog metal that is much more mature than the imitators of the legends. This is the single https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G9Qd_84YZs
| OmairSh After reading a few of Russell's comments a while back about the albums, he was basically saying he doesn't have control over what happens with it and he's just waiting to record his vocals. Didn't think Romeo would become such a control freak and dictator. Not good signs. I hope this doesn't frustrate band members and cause them to leave. Anyway we have had to wait another 4 years for a new album and I'm hoping it'll be good.
| OmairSh Definitely agree on the fact that songwriting should be distributed like in the old days. I don't necessarily want them to have neoclassical elements again, but if Romeo wants to continue in the heavy direction then at least have some new ideas. Electronic elements, middle eastern flair, more mellow moods, etc. But for bands that have been around for this long it's normally difficult to bring fresh ideas, unless your band leader is Robert Fripp.
| OmairSh I agree. The song is basically a rehash of old ideas but it works well. The chorus is terrific. I would have liked the keyboards and bass to be higher in the mix, but this is the single and I'm sure the keyboards have more presence on the rest of the album. Iconoclast was very underwhelming and one dimensional. I expected more of the same for this album, but I think the album will be like PL. Although I want them to progress, at this point I'd take an album like PL,esp looking at DT's situation
| OmairSh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z3AHbjeb1U
| Flugmorph Im lately pretty fet up with these list. We will see
| manosg oh yeah, second side is incredible. MMT actually used to be my favorite Beatles for a long time. Nowadays it's probably Revolver though.
| manosg Thanks Snow! Sweet rating on Magical Mystery Tour.
| ZombicidalMan made the list, but it glitched out so Id it. will start again this week, hopefully have it up by friday
| ZombicidalMan yeah, I plan to finally do the last 51 when I have some free time (possibly tomorrow). I thought I might pick a few gems myself and then let other users comment with suggestions and fill it in that way, rather than just doing the whole thing alone
| LepreCon It's good to be back! Yeah early Camel has some serious jams
| Flugmorph For me it's the second best record this year so far after hands.cannot.erase
| pedro70512 Nah I photographed a show of theirs with Skeletonwitch and Amon Amarth for the label and got to meet them after. They're super cool dudes.
| pedro70512 I've never really given Enslaved the time they deserve, honestly. I loved Axioma though, and RIITIIR was great but I need to listen to it more (he says as he looks over at his signed copy of RIITIIR with a frown).
| pedro70512 Glad to help, man. Nothing better than someone else falling in love with your favorite music, yeah?
| pedro70512 You've got some great stuff rated. Check out TGOO, Gris - A L'ame Enflammee, and Deathspell Omega - Paracletus. Some really cool experimental black/death metal that's not too kvlt to have reviews or be easy to find.
| pedro70512 Oh hey! I have it at #3 for the year behind The Great Old Ones and Saor. You looking for similar stuff to jam?
| Torontonian hey snowdog! i made a jazz list that i think you might dig since you like to jazz out!
| MrSirLordGentleman I don't think an album cover is that creative man, if you like it though, of course you're free to use it
| Titan jesus man, a 4.5 for beyond the red mirror?
| Jethro42 btw, this is apparently a great place to start when it comes to Zheul; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyrefoqcBLc
| Jethro42 Hey, I never heard 1001 Centigrades, but I'll check it out. I'm not that familiar with that subgenre...You got Dun - Eros which is a great one (if you dig that one, try Maneige, whatsoever they've done, they really rule). I'm sure that link is gonna be helpful to you. http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=11Good luck, and give me some feed back!
| tempest-- Yeah dude they're playing a nationwide festival down here and I'll be seeing them there. I looked at their recent setlists though and I'm kind of disappointed but idc, it's fvcking Judas Priest m/
| JamieTwort Happy new year to you too, man. Nice, yeah I agree. It's very different to TaaB, despite following the same one song in two halves structure, and I think both albums are brilliant in different ways.
| Torontonian nice! If you're looking for a (very) psychedelic album i highly recommend "Up the Downstair". IF you want more prog, i would check deadwing. And Steven Wilson is releasing a new album in a couple months in case you're interested!
| Totengott I might have to get my hands on the Rush albums we spoke of, they're very cheap.
| Titan Haha, you have excellent taste my friend! We do differ a little within that realm but that's ok!
| Friday13th I know, right? I hate how you can't find good piano music for modern rock beyond a certain difficulty level.
| Friday13th Dude have you heard Genesis Piano Project? Oh man, I just wish they sold sheet music of this stuff. http://youtu.be/srQBpDHl88U
| tempest-- Thanks. I'll probably get it one day but it's not something I'll buy any time soon.
| Torontonian SUp man. You should Check Bjork-Homogenic. It might be the most beautiul album ever made. I was listening to it yesterday and my head hurt afterwords from breathing to heavily(not joking).
| OmairSh Love this song so much (Dregs song played by Steve's band) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9PmrH0demA
| OmairSh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgqI_J1ZxwE
| OmairSh Yes you do man. If you liked the debut then you're in for a treat with the rest of the albums. One of the most solid discographies I've ever heard, really wish they'd make a new album
| OmairSh Nice Dixie Dregs rating, genius band
| manosg Jon Schaffer was a solid songwriter and one of the best rhythm guitarists I've listened. And yeah I agree with your assessment of the album compared with the Blind Guardians and the two thrash albums you've mentioned. I do like the Ripper albums as well but after Something Wicked This Way Comes I kinda got bored of the band. I feel that they have been repeating themselves a lot. Solid band nonetheless.
| manosg Nice rating for Night of the Stormrider! Are you a fan of Iced Earth?
| Torontonian ya not sure how school day's average is 3.8. more like 4.8 . :D
| Torontonian Return Forever eh? i'll check into that for sure. I just heard of this god yesterday but i am honestly 100% blown away. gonna check "return forever" and his other 70's stuff, hopefully its just as good as those two. :)
| Torontonian Nice Stanley Clarke Ratings! Finally, someone else on sputnik that has heard of this mans genius! currently trying to spread the word about him. Cus the ratings he has are a complete travesty.
| tempest-- click edit profile options under your profile pic then in Last.fm type your username
| Torontonian Dang! already rated moonmadness! thats awesome man. It ages like wine though i assure you. Give it some time and i'm fairly certain you'll five it ;). Just trust me
| Torontonian Awesome! And it gets better with every listen btw. The first time i heard it it was like a 3.5 now look where its at. :)
| Torontonian Hey i see you enjoyed Mirage. Try Moonmadness, i think its even better! and its a contestant for my fave album ever!
| LepreCon Hellz yeah I do, Tarkus is awesome!
| Toondude10 I'm going to take a bit of a break from that actually, I want to focus on a few other things and I'm going to be very busy within a few weeks. I'm not sure when I'll get back to the rest of the albums but hopefully I'll finish it up before the year ends.
| OmairSh Their whole discog is brilliant, Steve Morse is a feckin G, and his best work is definitely with the Dregs. And the Great Spectacular was actually released much later but was officially their first album. You'll really enjoy the next few albums, the productions is much much better
| OmairSh Yo Snow, have you listened to The Dixie Dregs? Great jazz rock/fusion band led by Steve Morse. I'm sure you'd enjoy them
| mandan Prob dude, it's one of my 4 fave 'Deth albums for sure.
| mandan SWoD, MoR, and a 2003 remaster (if I remember well) of PSBWB are the MP3 albums I own.
| FragileRelayer Thanks pal! And I love a great deal of those artists already.
| Muisc4Life26 Hey dude, i love Jazz Fusion, Return To Forever is by far one of my favorites, Weather Report is suberb as well and Pat Metheny is a very good guitarist. You should check out! John Coltrane- My Favorite Things, Miles Davis- Bitches Brew, Frank Zappa- Grand Wazoo, Santana- Abraxas, Mahavishnu Orchestra- The Inner Mounting Flame, Billie Holiday- Music For Torching, Sonny Rollins- Saxophone Colossus, Wayne Shorter- Speak No Evil, Charles Mingus- The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
| Muisc4Life26 Thanks bro!! Jazz is awesome and if you want any recs?, then be free to shoutbox me anytime :)
| TableGuy Blame TSOP for sucking so much.
| mandan Les Binks was pretty talented though imo.
| mandan I've recently become a fan of Clive Burr's drumming, I think he was really something on the first 2 Maiden albums. He had an element of surprise that I find rare in many drummers. However that my opinion. Even though I'm more of a Priest guy, I think Burr was better than any Priest drummer.
| CrossoverOrDie Thanks man, looks like you have great taste yourself. Based on your 5's looks like you enjoy your classical and fusion. I can agree with Jaco and Weather Report.
