By far the most *** kicking release of the year, Converge drop their second guitarist but continue to be one of the most intense bands on the planet. From the brutal opening tracks, to the near ballad-y ?Grim Heart/Black Rose,? to the almost emocore ?Lonewolves,? this is arguably the most well rounded album Converge have yet to release.

Converge, while having created an album of seamless flow, made the mistake of being entirely relentless. The band almost never gives the listener any real chance to catch their breath amongst the aural assault of headache-inducing dissonance, extremely rapid-fire instrumentation, and generally unintelligibly harsh vocals. Even the quiet, instrumental interlude "Weight of the World" is entirely dissonance and feedback.
Somehow, Converge has managed to pull the wool over the eyes of many with No Heroes, though I can't help but realize that most of the album is 1-dimensional in precisely the worst way. The material appears on the surface to be intricate and complex, despite the utter lack of any discernible coherent structure. The members of the band all know their instruments in, out, backwards and forwards, but their intense, brutal technicality leads only to chaos - the lack of restraint leaves the experience seeming almost utterly disorganized and scatterbrained. It is a train wreck of too many ideas in too short a space, garbled in a mess of feedback and violence.

The best way to describe this album: Misrepresented. There are certain genres that people should know they will not like, and Metalcore is one of them. With Converge's lastest release "No Heroes" people have gone based off of popularity on whether to pick it up or not. Simply because it was voted the top album by 15ish people does not mean they represent the entire world for what the top album of 2006 is. This album has plenty to offer and is a gem in the Converge collection with breaktaking riffs and menacing drumming. From the sludge-metal "Plagues" to the 58 second "Vengeance" Converge provides a relentless experience. It's a shame that it got in the wrong hands of the wrong people. We have been learning thoughout our lifetimes to adapt to certain things and Converge may be one of them.

grim heart/black rose and trophy scars are two of my favorite songs ever. they are the best thing to listen to when I want my emotions to explode out of me. could care less for most of the rest of the songs, but god those two are amazing.

When I first listened to this, I expected to be pleased with one of the hardcore genre's most brutal, unique bands. I did not, however, expect to listen to, what sounded like, guitars, keyboards, drums, bass, and vocals (that remind me of the mummies moans' in The Mummy) exploding inside a metal trashcan and kicked down a flight of stairs. If you couldn't tell already, I'm not a fan of the disheveled, chaotic bands. While I'm listening to "Sacrifice", four minutes into the album, I already have a concussion because I'm bashing my head against the keyboard. I will give them some credit with the middle of the album. "No Heroes" is almost catchy.........almost. "Plagues" is downright creepy and is the most unique song of the lot. "Grim Heart/Black Rose" is, in my opinion, the best song of the album (which isn't saying much) but even Jonah Jenkins can't save it from being an entire waist of nine and a half minutes. On the bright side (although it is dim at best), Converge is quite original, I will give them that. As far as being one of the best bands of the hardcore genre, however, I cannot agree.

Converge have always been one of the most forward-thinking bands in hardcore, never making the same album twice. Acting as the follow-up to the bleak You Fail Me, No Heroes is the band at their most uncomplicated and simplistic, but also their most primal and brutal. The album makes use of short bursts of intense, noisy hardcore with tons of guitar feedback and longer, more atmospheric numbers. It's easily their most sparse and stripped down, but therein lies its charm: it's their tribute to their roots of in-your-face hardcore, to the immense and sloppy punk-tinged metalcore from whence they were born. The standout tracks are the swift punch to the face "Hellbound", the post-metal influenced "Grim Heart/Black Rose", and the anthemic "Trophy Scars", but all of these tracks have at least something to take from them, no matter how short. With all that said, No Heroes may not be Converge's best work, but it is definitely not one to be overlooked.

Hahaha, this album is still gold 15 years later. The drumming is fantastic and while most of the songs just keep towing the line from front to end, one has to admit that the pace is not unrelenting. Songs like Plagues and GH/BR give space to breathe, while at the same time retain the heaviness of the album. That's pretty fucking awesome.

"No Heroes" underrated as fuck. Converge has always been able to produce and create masterpieces in all strands and spaces of time between releases. The first part of this album is like getting hit by a truck several times in just five minutes. The rest may seem dull and appealing in melody that feats some Sludge and Doom elements, but it works completely together.

Converge released a full-length album in 2004 known as You Fail Me - a record where the band truly hit the nail on the head. Fast forward to two years later, when they put out No Heroes. Arguably it has more in common with their earlier recordings - especially the amazing Jane Doe - except with some of the substance on this album's antecedent. At times, the musicianship isn't very focused, and the typically intense production from guitarist Kurt Ballou seems somewhat watered down. As a whole, however, No Heroes still provides face-ripping riffage, Jacob's deranged screams, and even sheer gloom; "Grim Heart/Black Rose" and "To the Lions", anyone?

The first 5 songs go for 6 minutes and the last 5 five just feel like a giant mess. It still enjoy the album but it is in the unfortunate position of being compared to previous albums. And sadly, No Heroes doesn't quite hold up.

Although hugely overshadowed by the collosal Jane Doe, No Heroes is an epic in its own right. Probably Converge's most dynamic, wide open and all round diverse album, with a plethora of interesting and creative musical ideas in a ultra brutal hardcore/grind/metal context. Where Jane Doe is like a speeding freight train, No Heroes is more like an earthquake or tsunami. Sorry to be all metaphorical and lame, but what I'm basically saying is listen to this album. The highlights for me are the softer parts and the drums being really high in the mix (with guitars being surprisingly low), because this is some of the most interesting and emphasised drummming on any Converge album I've heard.

First Converge album I checked out and I must say, I was disappointed.
I like hardcore, but there's very little distinction between the first four tracks and even I started believing that these were meant to be one big track. To me, they're tolerable at best.
I like the drumming on this album and to me, it proves to be the saving grace of this CD. However, I have to agree with a few people here who feel that all members are all over the place.
I finally understand why people complain about the vocals. This makes Tommy Rogers of Between the Buried and Me sound like Sam Cook or Frank Sinatra. I can appreciate the vocals as being part of the brutality of a band's song structure, therefore the vocals must match the loud, aggressive, hard music played in the background, but this is too much screaming even for me. It's too unintelligible and unenjoyable. The album as a whole is unmemorable as well, but b/c I do love hardcore, I was able to, at the very least, tolerate 9 tracks from this.

People going on complaining how mindless and overtly brutal/dissonant this album is. Well 1. In terms of this being brutal/dissonant-this is Converge, so what are you expecting? 2. Although it be weird to call it a grower, if the listener looked beyond this being some mess they would actually realize the amount of raw beauty Converge has portrayed here. There isn't a band out there that can pour out such an emotional intensive atmosphere like Converge. All 14 tracks here are absolute ace with a killer rhythm section, Kurt's incredible guitar riffage, and Jacob being the awesome madman he's always been. Unless you clearly don't like metalcore/thrash or whatever. No Heroes is worth your time and patience because to be honest, raw beauty never felt so good.

This is probably my favorite Converge album, or at least tied with Jane Doe. The production is top notch and is one of the loudest things you'll ever hear. These guys know how to write a riff, there's no doubt about it. And they are unrelenting, the drummer sounds like he wants to bash in your skull nearly at all times. The main things that hold them back imo are the vocals being much too one dimensional, and they have a knack for drawing things out far too long on some songs. Other than that, this is one of the best releases the year it came out.

With No Heroes, Converge continue their audible onslaught in their own signature style. Guitarist Kurt Ballou and bassist Nate Newton still manage to create some of the most face-melting, slaying riffs heard in extreme music, yet being able to slow down for more moody passages when needed. Ben Koller retains his status as one of the best drummers around -- period. Jacob Bannon however seems to be suffering from a mild writer's block. While his lyrics had been extremely solid on Converge's past two releases, on No Heroes Bannon doesn't seem to be able to channel his anger with the same finesse in his writing as he did before. Let's hope that, after 17 years, Bannon's (and with that, Converge's) fire isn't slowly burning out.
