Unbelievable that this isn't more widely regarded as a classic in the US. In my top 20 of
all time. Masterful songwriting, well recorded and mixed. The guitar playing is inventive
and interesting, nice full bouncy bass guitar, lots of layers of folk instruments without
sounds like a 70s folk album. The songs range across a wide spectrum of emotional color:
there are stompers, dirges, the anthemic title track... Little Beggar Girl sounds like a
shanty to my ears. And Linda Thompson's voice cuts a groove right into your brain.
