This is pure metal right here. Unbelievably aggressive and more technical than the manual to a super computer, all with appropriately muddy production that actually enhances the experience rather than detracts from it. The holy grail of brutal death metal, and one of my top 20 albums ever.

Truly adventurous in its brutality, this album essentially began the brutal death metal genre. The drums are unrelenting, the guitar is devastating, the bass is loud and heavy and the vocals are simply phenomenal. Nothing before had even attempted to be this thick and heavy, and nothing since has really exceeded it.

Probably the best DM record of all time except for maybe Left Hand Path? More digestible than Pierced (despite the rrrrrr vocals) and I love how the guitars sound like bees

In regards to composition, I find this to be pretty equal to Pierced From Within. It's technical, but in a way that you don't realize just how mind boggling the guitar work is without looking at the tabs. This is not tech-death after all. It is brutal death metal, and brutal it is. The riffs are full of the typical chromatic death metal melodies which admittedly do become mundane as the album goes on. Fortunately, the rhythms of the riffs remain fresh and creative for the full runtime and this is further enhanced by the expert drumming which beats the listener into submission. The production is not quite as refined as Pierced From Within with the guitar being muddy and lacking note clarity.

Cornerstone of Brutal Death Metal. I would dare saybthe most important record to the genre other than Cryptopsy?s None so Vile, it really lives up tonthe name. Technical, mindlessly brutal, and really great. Only problem, like many of its peers, it lacks variation badly.

Not many records are capable of innovating in a scene that appeared beyond experimentation, but this is one of the rare ones that manages it. Like the review says, this album doesnt give a fuck about you. The production is raw and brutal, the riffs are tight, the solos weedle squeal weeeeeoooooowwwwnnnnn like a motherfucker. If there is one death metal album, it's this one. By the way, Liege Of Inveracitys missing lyrics must be dope.

Contrary to what I was anticipating, Effigy is not an immediately gratifying record. The production of the album and the speed at which the members play their instruments make the record sound truly suffocating. It's like the whole thing is played under dirt and debris. Once your ear is trained to the production style, though, you're able to appreciate the impeccable musicianship and songwriting skills from the band. Multiple metal subgenres were pioneered by this record, and while most have come to be reviled by many, Suffocation knew how to do everything tastefully, making the breakdowns and slams (two terms that would earn the metal community's scorn years after the fact) seem like natural progressions of the songs. It's immensely technical, but not in a flashy way, as there's very little showboating to be found here. Rather, it is the malevolent riffs, solos, and slams that do the talking, and when backed by a truly excellent drum performance and vocals straight from the garbage-filled mud, make this pioneer of a record one of death metal's finest.

I really don't like the vocals on here; to me, the growling doesn't even sound like words. It is pretty solid instrumentally, but for some reason its to difficult to listen past the vocals during parts. This album is actually quite incredible aside from the vocals, I will probably view this album more favorably if I ever get used to the vocals though.

This is an essential album to the death metal genre and the sub-genre, brutal death metal. There are some big highlights worth mentioning. The unrelenting speed and heaviness of the drums are incredible on this album. The other big highlight of the album is Suffocation's vocalist, Frank Mullen, he has one of the strongest death metal growls I have ever heard.

Few other albums could ever hope to be quite as good as this one. This mixes technicality, brutality, and even a dash of melody perfectly into one supreme package. The riffing is as tight as could be asked for, the drumming is 100% incredible and the vocals are as intense as it gets. The bass is inaudible but who gives a shit, this album rules.
