Take a band like Dream Theater. Now, remove the vocals, the annoying synth sounds, the long song lengths, and the same recycled riffs. What's left is literally nothing, except fancy drums and bass which are actually a good thing. In this release Symphony X gathers up these two elements and adds their own sound. Abandoning the heavy power influence, what we have here are crunchy guitars and synth that does not overpower the overall sound. What really stands out here are the gruff vocals; the singing has that gravelly sound to it which definitely helps bring out the snarling beast of the band. Riffs may borrow ideas from thrash but still retain originality. Whether they come in at full speed or in the lovely half-time, the listener will find himself bobbing along without thinking. In conclusion, Paradise Lost strays from past Symphony X releases by losing the power metal sound. Instead, what the listener gets is a healthy dose of progressive metal.

Curious as to why this only has a 4. Maybe because it doesn't have a full fledged epic? Epics don't make albums. Great musicianship all around does, which is what this album does so much better than every other Symphony X album.

Symphony turn up the heavy, and accompany it with tons of neoclassical guitarwork. That is almost always a way to hook me in. Less of the powery features the band does so often here. Allen pills up with gruffier vocals, and Romeo is the clear mainpoint in here. That combinantion is amazing.

Another masterpiece by this GREAT band....the title track is one of the best melodic songs i have ever heard, "Eve of seduction" is one of the best SX songs ever and the emotional "The sacrifice" is one of the best metal ballads...also "seven" and "Set the world on fire"(the hit of the album) are excellent songs...

Symphony X come damn close to providing a true masterpiece on Paradise Lost. While the neo classical influences have all but disappeared in exchange for a more thrash-oriented approach, the results are equally solid. One of the band's darker and heavier works, this is sure to appeal to a wider audience than their previous works since it's easier to enjoy as a more straightforward metal album. But this shouldn't discourage fans of their older material, as the music here is even more vigorous than before.

With this album Symphony X take a new step into much more heavier territory. Unfortionatly, I think they lost something in the process, for some reason the album seems to drag a bit and I miss the keyboards as they don't play as big of a role here. Also, the harsher vocals don't seem to have the same power as when he used to let his cleans 'soar' on previous albums. In fact my highlights would be the keyboard driven title track and the soft "The Sacrifice" that hark back to the Symphony X of old.rTop 3 Tracks: "Paradise Lost", "The Sacrifice" "Revelation"

This albumn is incredible! If u are a fan of metal whatsoever u must give it a listen. The cd is heavier than there prior work and faster. Not saying i'm not a fan of therer old stuff, but dude. Solo's on the record are superb and intense.I personally think M.Romeo as one of the best. From sick tapping licks to sweeping,super shred. Riffs are great as well.Hidden in the cd is even a flamenco type outro! All the songs have there own feel for sure. two ballad type songs. There are no really bad songs to find here. Some favorites are Walls of Babylon,Eve of Seduction, Paradise Lost, and Set the world Afire(many other really good ones though).Vocals are also a noteworthypoint to make. Killer Vocals you can always make out and show aggression , and many other moods. Keyboard solos and leads, bass into's,this cd kicks ass!Get your copy NOW. This album is terrible considering how good the musicians are that wrote it. I enjoyed the cd for about 2 weeks, and then totally stopped listening to it. There's really nothing on this cd that you can't find on various other metal albums, so I wouldn't recommend it.
