3.5 great | zaruyache | July 28th 15 | Evensong you can't take the roads to judah to bermuda bc judah refers to a train line and the rtrains don't run under water jesus do you people even pay attention at all i mean come on. you'd rtake the road to judah then get off at the coast and sunbathe on the boat on the way to new rbermuda which is not like old bermuda btw bc they renovated the place since you were there last. rSo what i'm saying is first is the road to judah then the sunbathing then bermuda. Then when ryou're there you can enjoy the sight of the lovely tunnel of pecan trees from your bedrooms' rwindows and go sunbathing (obvsly). It'll be like living in a dream house, and when it's over ryou'll keep reminding yourself to please remember forever, and try not to get vertigo at the idea rof leaving.

2.0 poor | virpi | September 28th 15 | I'm working as a music reviewer and I've got a physical copy, too. The drums sound horrible, they are overcompressed and badly equalized. Basically, they remind me of flower pots and pans. The guitars sound as expected, they surely could use more punch. But I'd be okay with that "low-fi" sound, if it supported the overall atmosphere of the songs. In my opinion, it doesn't - it's quite the opposite. The sound is way too flat and one-dimensional, as is the overall songwriting. rSunbather really touched me, while New bermuda leaves a stale taste in my ears.

3.7 great | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | September 24th 15 | As the surreal album cover would suggest, New Bermuda is a much darker and more melancholic record than smash hit Sunbather from only two years ago. Soaring dream pop melodies and their most furious black metal yet clash in one of the most diverse records of the year, a passionate, furious, unpredictable journey through all sides of the band's sound thus far. This is not Sunbather Part 2, but a different beast altogether, and serves as a fantastic progression for the young group thus far.

4.0 excellent | Mythodea | August 1st 20 | Having only recently given a chance to Sunbather and finding it not quite up my alley, I was
hesitant that New Bermuda would be a challenging listen as well. On the contrary, I found it way
more accessible than its predecessor, without feeling that the band's sound had been watered down
since their sophomore album, but had only matured. Leaving aside the stylistic preferences of the
genre, the compositions were actually genious, and I found there were many genre-crossings, in a
manner I didn't expect from a black-gaze album. Little nuances and intricacies await for you to
pick up, but this is not an album that lives off subtle details, but rather on build ups and
releases, and remains suspenceful and interesting throughout. It is an album that welcomes you to
discover what's hidden inside, but also may be one of the best entry points for the band's work as
a whole.

4.5 superb | BHAR | February 27th 16 | On New Bermuda, Deafheaven were so pleased with themselves and the acclaim they received on Sunbather that they made a second masterpiece in a row. Now darker, unaware of fond drama, but still subtle and beautiful, it feels like a journey. The only downside to this album is that it's shorter and it has 5 tracks, and that's a little disappointing, but that doesn't mean any of them are filler. Deafheaven have proved why they should always be happy with they do and what they compose. P.S. Baby Blue gives me goosebumps almost every single time I hear it.

3.0 good | AutismElite | December 28th 15 | Loved Sunbather, personally thought it was much more depressing and darker. In NB, the heavy parts are much heavier (yes!) but the shoegazey parts were so, fruity and 80's - I didn't care for it. Gifts for the Earth would have been such a better song if the ending wasn't so gross and if throughout the album the heavy parts went on longer and the shoegazey parts flowed better. All the songs seemed to have the exact same structure, and it gets boring. The softness seems so forced while on Sunbather, hell even Roads to Judah, the softer parts just seemed to click, not to long and not to short, and they just sounded right. Still really enjoyed it though!

3.0 good | TheManMachine | November 16th 15 | Perhaps Sunbather's well-constructed dramaturgic flow was more essential than I assumed, or it could just be that they just lost some cohesion on this one. Sound-wise they're still majestic: heavies remain potent and shimmery softs prevail, arguably maturing as a band too -- the scourge here lies primarily in so-so songwriting and awkward transitions, and secondarily in questionable chugga-chug riffs/soloing of both dead-end and wah-wah varieties. Most Intriguing Moment is also most natural and most unlikely: ender "Gifts for the Earth", which ventures surprisingly close+comfortably to some sort of softie-screamo while fluidly embracing that strong ol' quiet-loud formula. Maybe a niche to consider if they don't wind up sorting all this out.

3.0 good | btati | November 12th 15 | Deafheaven are known for their mixing of different styles especially on their latest Sunbather. Overall this is a good record with great moments showing connections between loud and soft, beautiful and dark. This record is much darker in tone than Sunbather but it is not without its beautiful moments. My only problems are the stark contrasts they take especially on the first track. They go from a very heavy unforgiving metal assault which sounds great right into a pretty shoe-gazey bridge that does not have a good digression. It just changes for no real reason and the mood does not carry over properly. There are several of moments like this throughout the record that stand out to me. I do not think that makes it a bad record at all, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I just don't think it measures up to Deafheavens previous releases which seemed more consistent with what they wanted to do.

3.5 great | Jared Floryan | October 7th 15 | (7/30/17): San Francisco's own Deafheaven are an intriguing act - and their third full-length outing New Bermuda is equally fascinating; at the expense of consistency as well as awkward composition choices (e.g. the way fade-in/fade-outs are executed during "Brought to the Water" and "Gifts for the Earth"). Also, whilst the mixing on here is far from overproduced, Jack Shirley's production ends up sounding a bit rough around the edges overall. I'd elaborate more regarding that, but at the risk of coming off as a bigger tool than I already am, let's stop there. Still, Deafheaven at least succeeded on not boring me to tears with this album. The instrumentals do rather well conveying a generally pessimistic aura with fleeting moments of mirth while George Clarke's shrieks can be effective and are placed only in appropriate spots, too. These Californians have a nice formula going, though come subsequent records, hopefully they manage to iron out New Bermuda's songwriting kinks alongside pacing.

4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | October 3rd 15 | There has always been a weird mystique surrounding the Bermuda triangle. Tales of aliens, supernatural forces, and just about anything the mind can conjure have been told all stemming from this particular place. This mystery and eeriness is how Deafheaven have decided to approach their new record, New Bermuda, through tightened black metal dirges, beautiful and melodic post-metal swoons, and introspective lyrics. Things are much darker than on their previous opus Sunbather, as opener "Brought To The Water" will immediately show you, but that doesn't mean there aren't any pleasant and hopeful moments. Take the endings to "Come Back" and "Gifts For The Earth". The former makes use of an evocative post-rock passage to get the feeling across, whereas the latter makes use of a loud crescendo of black metal that eventually just becomes piano and acoustic guitar. In all, the refusal to stagnate is a great sign for the band, and by utilizing this tweak of sound, they've added another dynamic record to their discography and certainly cement their status as the premier "blackgaze" band.

4.5 superb | platttt | February 20th 24 | Even better than Sunbather. Every track here is incredible, especially the first two. The mix of post-rock and black metal really rips, with Deafheaven constantly shifting to keep the tracks fresh despite their length. This stuff is achingly gorgeous, so I'm willing to ignore all the metal elitists who give this band crap for "lack of integrity."

3.5 great | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | October 7th 23 | On 'New Bermuda', Deafheaven have decided not to try and chase the inexplicable newness and nowness of 'Sunbather' again, and instead focus on refining more ordinary tropes and textbooks, resulting in a great listen that, of course, cannot help but pale in comparison with its predecessor just by default.

4.0 excellent | capes | November 3rd 19 | Not as dazzling as listening to their infamous Pink Album, though they're treading much further into actual metal atmospheres on this. Songwriting-wise, they seem to be repeating themselves. Not too unusual for any metal artist, though with Deafheaven, I'm left wondering if they've exhausted all their good ideas already, and only three albums in! You can only shift from loud blast beat first half to post-rock jam second half so many times before it becomes predictable. Though predictable or not, I happen to like it for what it is.

5.0 classic | Risodo | April 21st 18 | All the songs that Deafheaven has elaborated in their career have a clear sentimental value inside my emotional. "New Bermuda" is another masterpiece of a band already established for pioneering a style that many have criticized but which is spectacular and perfect in all its pillars. "Brought to the Water" is intense and with many variations between genres, "Luna" is a punch in the face of who does not consider Deafheaven a band with clear influences of Black Metal, and the rest of the album only completes its mastery. I love this record and this band, and nothing will make me change my opinion about the sound perfection of their work.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 15 | New Bermuda from Deafheaven delivers a familiar package of black metal, post-rock and shoegaze akin to the group's previous effort Sunbather. Unfortunately much of New Bermuda comes off as uninspired and even sloppy at times with 'Baby Blue' and 'Come Back' creating a 20 minute void between superior tracks. On Sunbather Deafheaven provided an hour of masterful contrast between gentle instrumental sections and writhing, anxious black metal screaming. On New Bermuda a similar theme is followed but the songwriting is average with many awkward transitions between the poles of soft and heavy; some of the album almost feels like it could be B-sides from Sunbather. Chugging breakdown riffs and a wah-solo come out of nowhere and provide the worst moments of the album. It feels at times that the musicians lost focus and the inspiring moments are surrounded by large pads of filler. New Bermuda warrants a listen from any avid music listener with Brought to the Water and Gifts for the Earth worth revisiting.

4.5 superb | corzeske | November 24th 15 | After drawing a wider audience with the superb Sunbather, Deafheaven takes the listener on a sharp rollercoaster dive into the depths of black emotion with New Bermuda. Cutting through the darkness are beautiful major-key guitar melodies, expertly placed to feel like coming up for a breath before plunging below violent waves once more.

4.5 superb | BtwntheAKIRAndMe | November 3rd 15 | High 9 out of 10: It took three listens for me to give this a final rating because I didn't really know how to go about it on the first two. Deafheaven has more or less kept their A game on this new LP, exploring new territory and being more "metal". Really an intense release, probably the best metal LP of the year.
Bump |
2.5 average | 00mee | October 12th 15 | Cheesy solos, riffs rehashed from a Metallica b-side, and somewhere in the middle an obvious aching loss of the vivacity that made Sunbather incredible. By drawing back upon the tropes of the genre, Deafheaven find themselves in a somewhat precarious position. It's as if they've climbed Everest and are now delivering a second hand re-telling to everyone. It's just not the same.
Bump |
4.5 superb | judasgoat | October 1st 15 | Honestly, Deafheaven have managed to pull off an album that tops Sunbather. Where Sunbather sometimes dragged and got unfocused throughout its 60 minute runtime, New Bermuda is a pure, focused assault interspersed with calmness and beauty at just the right moments. And Come Back is probably the best song this band has done.
