2.8 good | Erwann S. STAFF | December 1st 20 | Big Black's first release truly is Albini's first solo project. While his college peers were off to Florida getting shitfaced and catching STDs, Steve spent a week recording this first EP in his room. It thus indeed sounds like a record made by a socially weird twentysomething: derivative of its influences (The Cure, Killing Joke), with pretentious lyrics, a shaky voice, but an already evident artistic vision. Indeed, Albini plays every instrument except for "sax bleats" and drums - courtesy of Roland the drum machine. It sounds like shit at times, but shit's intense.

0.0 | BMDrummer | July 10th 14 | The love this EP seems to gather on this site is sort of beyond me to be quite honest, it sounds very undeveloped, lacking confidence, and lacking identity. Sure, it's a very important place in Albini's career, but the sound seems very amateurish at this point. Steve himself called it the worst record he ever made, and perhaps rightfully so, since the lyrics are very repetitive and immature, the sound seems to be borrowed from tons of places in a poor way, and he simply doesn't sound too confident in his sound yet. But, what is here is passable, and might satisfy a Big Black fanatic like myself. Don't go in expecting true greatness though, as this is more an interesting release than a good one.
