hey look at me i'm ratcfc. i don't like this album very much so i use big words to make my point, but you're probably all adolescent cretins so you have no idea what i'm saying.
just know this: i have a much more important and vast vocabulary than you can even imagine; therefore, my opinion is more correct than yours

My roommate listens to a lot of shitty R&B. I'll usually drown it out with my lovely noise-canceling headphones, but sometimes I listen just so I can help myself understand why I hate R&B so much. I've decided that the genre is just so full of itself and really becoming a caricature of what it once was. When he listens to Boyz II Men and the like, I find myself actually enjoying it, but recent R&B annoys me to no end. It seems with recent acts, producers have been competing against each other to see who can cram the most superfluous effects into each song. And the lyrics are so exaggerated and superficial it's hard to not laugh.
808s and Heartbreak is bringing R&B back to basics. Kanye West takes the brash honesty that compelled him to say "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and applied it to simple heartfelt lyrics backed by simple heartfelt beats. The most surprising album of the year without a doubt.

6) 808's & Heartbreaks: Kanye West
Ok so I got around to listening to this and it is awful I find it bewildering that so many reviewers gave it good to decent marks. The only think I can think of is that they were so taken aback by differences between this and his previous work that they felt intimidated enough to give it critical praise ("I don't wanna look like I don't 'get it' so i'll pretend that I do. I mean, if its like, different, then it must be good, right?"). Let me break it down for them.
i) The production is NOT groundbreaking! It is well within the limits of what many electronic producers have been doing for a very long time. Just because Kanye just discovered the minimal techno sound doesn't make it trailblazing. A lot of it sounds like Kanye just adapted some Junior Boys and Slam beats, threw in a few soul sounds, and called it a day. It's lazy, unconvincing, and disingenuous
ii) For once, 50 Cent was right about something. This does sound like a T-Pain album. Kanye makes the baffling decision to sing rather than rap throughout 90% of the album. Of course the trouble with that is that he can't really sing to save his life. Even the 'ahem' liberal use of Auto Tune can't disguise how below par his singing is. In a sense, it actually makes this worse than a T-Pain album, because at least T-Pain can hold a note. Auto-Tune pitch distortions are ok if they are used sparingly for effect, but throughout the entire album? It doesn't sound 'futuristic' unless your perception of futuristic is Cher circa 1999. It comes as little surprise the the two bearable songs on the album include some rapping by Kanye or Weezy ('Heartless' and 'Tell Everybody That you Know')
iii) The lyrics will make you vomit unless you are an adolescent cretin.

I'm in love with you, but the vibe is wrong

Do we really deserve to endure this garbage?
We can only hope that Kanye's neurons have been overloaded with post breakup chemicals which have only temporarily rendered his musical ability null and void.

This album shocked me at first, with its auto-tune vocals and simple drum machine instrumentals, but it's grown on me a lot. These songs are pure emotion, probably because of the death of Kanye's mom and his fiancee leaving him, and I'm feeling it.

Remember "Flashing Lights"? How it actually sounded like lights flashing by every second or so (coupled with the city night life aesthetic), as Kanye rapped about going to the club and his latest sweethearts? It was a club song, among many other Kanye West club songs. Up until 808s And Heartbreak Kanye was only showing one side of himself, a late night club rat, a fast lane, bright-eyed city dweller. In Heartbreak however, West displays a more personal, memory-driven character and in turn his music is almost a complete 180 from his past. What West shows us here is the aftermath of the euphoria of stardom, the consequences of his previous work appearing into full view, highlighted by West's perils of fame in "Welcome To Heartbreak". It comes off as nothing but genuine and brave, a man not only accepting his new, big time place in the world, but revealing it for all to see and the results are fantastic.

A second lislten will confirm if I truly love this. But 808s and Heartbreak is to me, Kanye at his second most impressive. Every song manages to do what it sets out to do, the album is beautiful in its simplicity with auto-tune that I turned out to really like, contrarily to what I would've expected. A truly unique part of Mr. West's discography.

Kanye's most emotional record (above KSG and ye no question). You really feel his grief for his late mother and through some excellent tracks (Say you Will, Street Lights, Bad News and Coldest Winter), you sometimes forget the lows this album also offers (Paranoid, See You in My Nightmares).

Seen by many as Kanye's weakest effort but he is Kanye. His worst efforts still out class mostly any other artists' best and every single one of his records is worth checking out as they all bring a unique experience to the table. Coated in autotune but its extremely obvious the style Kanye was trying to create on 808s. Heartless, Paranoid and See You In My Nightmares are great tracks and the album as a whole creates a melancholic, dreary, lonely atmosphere that preserves Kanye's impressive streak of quality albums.

I find 808s is a pretty under rated album in Kanye's discography. But I can't honestly think of a rsingle song on the album that I dislike. Kanye has usually only used autotune in the past in rsongs as a simple aesthetic addition. But it is used as a tool here to construct the whole feel rof the album. 808's represents loss of love and well, Heartbreak. The cold and distant sound of rthe autotune helps to drive that feeling home perfectly. The cold robotic vocals express the idea rthat love is gone and it leaves an empty void feeling. From start to finish the album has some of rKanye's most interesting tracks; "Welcome to Heartbreak" "Amazing" "Robocop" "Coldest Winter". rAll over the album is quality. But people seem to overlook 808s, but it's definitely one of his rstrongest albums.

no, really? why DO i like this album so much? usually i cringe at the thought of ego-obsessed rappers whining about using music to solve all their emotional problems, and auto-tune to solve their vocal problems, but for some reason, this album just works for me. my favorite mainstream pop album of the decade.

I had my doubts. So did you. The second that Mr. West announced his next record would be entirely sung, as opposed to his normal rapping, teeth were grit and lips were bitten. A disaster was predicted.
And then?a miracle occurred.
808s and Heartbreak is a brilliant album. No longer does his cocky, self-assured side take prominence in his music as it has so frequently done in the past. There?s certainly no ?Good Life? to be found on 808s- this is an album of frustration, distance, loss, anxiety and a life in lethargy.
West risked commercial and critical success in favour of creating something completely on his own terms- and if songs like Say You Will, Robocop and Street Lights are anything to go by, perhaps his risks are worth taking more often.

College Dropout - Nice debut...Late Registration - Another amazing album...Graduation - Could have been better...808s and Heartbreak - Unforgivable....Kanye had so much potential. His first two albums were unique, catchy, and heartfelt. The third was okay, but had a number of flaws. But the fourth? He resorted to the ever-so-annoying 808 that the radio already overplays with T-Pain making this album hard to listen to. Overall, disappointing. Hopefully this 808 nonsense will not last and Kanye will go back to the good stuff.

808's is a bold move on Kanye's part, I was not really a fan of him before, but this didn't do anything to help that. This album is his first attempt at creating something of his own, and it is entirely forgettable. After the 5th or 6th track you'll start to realize every song just sounds too similar and uninspired.

Wow. This is easily one of the best records of this year. Boy I am tired of hearing people bitch about the autotune "t-pain effect". Listen, when I first heard the Love Lockdown sample, I was dissapointed that Kanye had succumbed to using it but i still decided to give the album a purchase, and it was worth it. This album is his best to date. You heard me. His beats and songwriting are at its finest. Make note though, this is not a straight up hip-hop album and i know that will scare many fans because as we know hip-hop fans are like emos in the sense that they will only listen to their genre of music and immediatley dismiss all others. Keep up the work Kanye.

I liked his first two albums loved but mostly hated the last one. This one sits right in between the production of the last one and the creativity of the first two.
