4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | February 4th 23 | Even though I've been a fan of theirs for the longest time, I have to admit that this new album is an improvement on all fronts, even if just for the sake of new and on-the-fence fans. If you've previously had a problem with their raw and buzzing sound or their last album's lack of direction, 'Heavy Heavy' offers a cleaned up infectious blast of some of Young Fathers' raunchiest and most effortlessly cool tracks.

2.0 poor | ajcollins15 | February 7th 23 | One thing has been and always will be true for the three-man group hailing from the UK, they really know how to fuse a lot of genres and ideas together into a unique and seamless set of tracks that is up there with the likes of King Krule, Moses Sumney, Frank Ocean, Nnamdi, and even Genesis Owusu. Everything comes together so well that it?s like the genre of young fathers is its own idea. However, the main flaw with this new album that has always plagued the band is the utter mess of a record it comes off as. ?Heavy Heavy? is probably meant to sound cluttered, but for me most of the tracks here sound rushed, underperformed, or underwriter (if not all these). Take ?Drum? a progressive and expansive track, but the drums feel stale and stagnate by the end of the track (even with the buildup that goes on), or the very dry ambient pop and neo-gospel track of ?Tell Somebody? where the same idea runs over and over again. Overall, it?s a rough experience, on top of the fact that nothing on here is memorable for me which is weird for how unique this record sounds. Will continue to wish for more from the band, but I think at this point I know what they are.

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | February 7th 23 | I never was entirely on board with these lads' proposition - too unrefined and all over the place despite some apparent chops at fusing pop, soul, and experimentalism. Well, they managed to do so on Heavy Heavy! Gospel is now the primary genre ruling the band's soundscape, and it gives the album a triumphant vibe that, coupled with radiant hooks, makes for the greatest album of this very young year 2023.
