Lantlos pursue a particularly dreamy metal direction already greatly in trend at the time, but somehow Lantlos' level of simplicity feels like a breath of fresh air.

2010 blackgaze; ofc it has Neige in it and Fursy Teyssier crafted the cover art! Founded by German bro Herbst, this second Lantlos album is typical blackgaze with an added - slight - post-metal edge. Neige's growls counterbalances the post-rock crescendos and shoegaze pedals, and while this aesthetic is indeed super cool, it does drag towards the end of the album. Still, an excellent blackgaze record that would probably have gotten a higher rating if I discovered it back then.

Indubitably builds upon the strengths of its predecessor and adds lots to it, but not without flaws. There are lots of phases here where the post- DNA is most apparent, especially in the simple yet efficient intro of 1 and 3 where it could almost be a CoL song in places. And frankly I quite dig it. After that the bm entry 1 is a bit meh though, and the album despite the sweet round bass doesn't start the strongest way. The second reprise 5min in is super sweet and almost envy-esque though, prefacing the peak of the album on 2-3, with 2 being just strong overall especially at the start and 3 demonstrating lots of these newer elements I mentioned with post-metal vibes, clean singing from Neige (obviously lovely), and just a very cool song overall. The album never makes it quite back to that quality though, with 4 being fatter and cool but not as compelling, 5 not having the best intro but cool bm thereafter, and 6 which is slower and more cinematic. By that point things feel a bit draggy, and the heights of 2-3 feel a bit distant, but I do dig the grand, gritty outro to the album. An album that demonstrates very good steps forward and could easily be 4.0 if not more in its best phases. 3.85

This band beats many blackgaze acts. Really awesome balance between harsh and melo (bm and jazzy post), and very good songwriting (against Deafheaven's endless crescendos - ps: New Bermuda's digger here). Fave tracks are Pulse/Surreal (incredibly emotional song), These Nights Were Ours and the T/track. I see 4.5 potential on this one.

Neige's shrieking, painful vocals (one of his best performances) add perfectly to the frosty urban atmosphere of this album, stylistically ranging from post rock-tinted black metal to chilled, jazzy moments. Herbst's most accomplished work as of yet. - 8.5 to 9.0

Although quite nice at times it suffers from repetitive and bland songwriting. These Nights Were Ours is definitely its strongest feature.

When you're doing a combination of two different styles, each style needs be executed well for a good album to come out. I find the black metal elements on the album rather monotonous and boring to be honest. They could have definitely benefited from a real drummer. The mix leaves a lot to be desired too--it sounds a bit washed out, not crisp at all. The hypnotic post-rock parts add a lot though to the black metal when done in tandem and are executed fairly well. The last track, ".neon" is basically the exact same as the closing track on their self-titled, which I find a bit frustrating.
