Easily the most underrated Children of Bodom. It?s pretty clear -based on how eccentric it is musically and the more streamlined songwriting they would display on subsequent albums - that this is Bodom still gestating, but there is something so endearing about the youthful ambition it radiates, even if it does come across a bit unfocused at times; it?s all part of the charm. Potential just oozes throughout its seven tracks, an unspoken promise that would be fulfilled throughout their future records. It?s amalgam of death, black, heavy, and neo-classical metal(s) still feels fresh and exciting 23 years later, and in my humble this is one of the best debuts albums in extreme music history, ranking up there with Iron Maiden, Metallica, and any other ?classic? metal band. rTl:dr - this fucking slaps.

It's tough to summarize an album like Something Wild. Children of Bodom has gone on to achiev metal success, but it would be a crime to forget where they started. Their first album, while a mere 7 songs and 32 minutes, was a very interesting combination of neoclassical power metal and atmospheric melodic black metal. Laiho's voice at the time is topped in quality only by his skill on a guitar, despite his apparent sloppiness at the time. Still, songs such as Deadnight Warrior and Lake Bodom have become Children of Bodom classics, and the range of elements present on the album makes for a very interesting, exciting listen.

DEADNIGHT WARRIOR 3; Shadow best song on the album but it's only a 3.5; Red light pt 1 one of the worst things they've ever done 2; Red light pt 2 3.5; LAKE BODOM 3.5; NAIL 3.5; Angel of DEATH 3.5 easily 2nd worst bodom album anyone who doesnt think so can KISS MY NOR-DIC PALE WHITE ASS. early rendition of band track sucks as does mass hypnosis cover but their little drunken keyboard sprawl is pure win and i clipped it as a separate track

On their debut Something Wild Children of Bodom are quite a different wild beast than what they turned into on their later releases. Here Bodom almost sounds like a black Metal band in places especially in how they utilized the key boards which on this album is more used to add atmosphere than anything else. Lexi's vocals almost have a raw Black Metal sound to them as well. To add to this Children of Bodom also experimented a little with their neoclassical influences on some songs like In the Shadows and The Nail, in the end all of these influences aren't packaged as neatly as they are on Bodom's later releases so it is a tad messy sounding to say the least. Otherwise it is a rippingly fast album and a tease of the greatness to come. Best songs: Red Light in My Eyes part 1, Lake Bodom, and Touch like the Angel of Death.

Scratchy and inconsistent, there's still enough Alexi Laiho driven neo-classical goodness here to make for a fun listen. The songs are fast and energetic, even when they're derivative, and the best moments are strong and plenty enough to carry it.

I love all the song, but my favourite are "Red light in my eyes, pt. 1", "Red light in my eyes, pt.2" and especially "The nail"; but also the other songs are very notable.

Children of bodom would never get a rating higher that 4 from me becuase of the vocals. but the guitar work is always amazing. personally i perfer there other material. alexi laiho is purly amazing. for the people who call this power metal, please stop. it is not. alexi himself said he fu.king hates when people call it that. he see's it as thrash or just metal. thats from a guitar world interview.

It dosen't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Alexi can shred on the guitar. Few think of him as a wanker (whom are people that need to be shot). "In The Shadows" was my first interaction with CoB, and it was a damn good one. Oh, and both parts of Red Light In My Eyes are brilliant.
