Mellow music, packed with a couple layers, and filled with insightful lyrics from James Mercer. However, that's not enough to stop me from being bored by their sound. Lullaby-ish in it's motions, the lush atmospheres that The Shins create are, in some cases, utterly boring to listen to. What they do to spice it up here is a bit nice, some electronics here, some more blatant flair of influences there, but when they head straight towards their sound plainly, it's a major drag even if they're doing it well. I think a 3.2 fits this album well, but since i can't go around there, I'll just round down to 3 and call it a day.

Simple and enjoyable "indie" music. Nice imagery in the lyrics. Not trying too hard pays off for this record, practically classic as far as the band is concerned.

After you listen to this for a while, the 'ugh, indie pop fluffy stuff' feeling goes away, and The Shins' best album becomes something to truly treasure. Chutes Too Narrow is the kind of album you have to marvel at: you really can't find a consistent batch of songs like this hardly anywhere else. The Shins accomplish absolutely nothing new or original here - just great shit all the way through. Superb, indeed.

At first I wasnt a fan of the album. I thought it was quite average compared to their stellar debut "Oh, Inverted World." However, after a few more listens this album reveals itself to be just as good as thier debut. The vocals are higher up in the mix, while keeping the atmospheric production that gave a mysterious vibe to thier pop songs. Songs like Mine's Not a High Horse, So Says I, Fighting In a Sack, and Turn A Square are all excellent extremely catchy songs that are the highlights of the album, but the entire first half of the album is top notch. The energy dips towards the end, but this doesnt mean the songs are any weaker.
