This album sat comfortably toward the lower end of their discography for me, which still means it’s fucking art. But seeing the beggar performed live gave me a whole new appreciation for this behemoth.

This feels like the perfect reconciliation of White Light's bright gothic folk and the trilogy's ambitious, expansive song structures.

IDK man for Gira to putting out work like this after a 40+ year career when a million other bands have become legacy acts after a decade of "good albums" is pretty telling. This obviously isn't the best thing he's done but I'd say it surpassed all my expectations.

Absolutely, and though it isn't uncharted territory for Swans it's a clear progression from Leaving Meaning's sound. They're not done exploring yet and that's more than can be said for most bands of their vintage.

Def disagree on this not being near the top of achievements. And I thought we were all on the same page that Swans has spent the last decade or so focused on iterating on past ideas.

I like it but can definitely see why others feel that Gira ran out of steam by reaching this point in his career. To me "Leaving Meaning" represented a natural evolution from the trilogy. Downgrade in the eyes of many, but it was just mellower and more minimalistic, stripped from the bombastic noise and tribal drums. The Beggar, on the other hand, rather feels like a reiteration of their earlier works, not much new to say apart from drooling more vigorously on aging, burnout and death. It contains some very memorable tracks though.

They closed with Birthing when I saw them. There was a five minute section at the end of just obliterating noise and then a cut to complete silence within everyone in the 300 person crowd just staring into space. Claps came about five seconds later, I will never forget it
