Brave Bird--the self-described "frat boys of emo", "plop plunkers" and "boy geniuses of emo" from Ann Arbor, Michigan--seem as if they are just another run-of-the-mill emo revival band, making use of melodic "twinklecore" guitars, urgent Brand New-reminiscent vocals, confessional lyrics, and a place on the roster for Count Your Lucky Stars Records. Consisting of singer/guitarist/songwriter Chris Lieu, bassist Mike Politowicz, drummer Mark Buckner and guitarist Matt Terrigan, the band's sound actually entails characteristics that are far less predictable than one would think. Their sprawling, complexly finger-picked guitars, driving punk grooves, and innate sense of innovation with song structure make for a compelling experience in emo music that somehow yields a definitively pop appeal but bleeds originality and a forward-thinking mentality. From fast-paced, catchy chorus anthems to post-rock-meets-pop-punk slow burners, Brave Bird have contained their refreshing, individual sound in the demo EP Ready or Not, released in 2010, which was followed up much later by their debut album Maybe You, No One Else Worth It in 2013. With their sophomore record already written long before the end of 2013, Brave Bird released the 10" EP T-Minus Grand Gesture in May 2014. They played shows alongside emo revival contemporaries including the likes of Dowsing, Dads, Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate), The Hotelier and Foxing before breaking up in July of 2014. « hide |
