| Groezrock 2013
Another year, another edition of Groezrock, the festival with the cream of the crop in the punk and hardcore world. These are the bands I saw (chronologically): | 1 | The Rocket
Pretty fun pop punk band from Belgium. Nice way to start the weekend. | 2 | The Riverboat Gamblers
The sound at the main stage was absolutely terrible throughout the day. Nevertheless, this Hot Water Music-inspired band was really enjoyable. | 3 | Streetlight Manifesto
So yeah, no need to introduce these guys. Pretty much the best ska band still active today. They played a couple of new songs, lots of classic ones and delivered one of the biggest parties of the festival. | 4 | A Wilhelm Scream
Complete chaos, and all the better for it. I would've like a couple more Career Suicide tracks though. | 5 | The Kids
Legendary punk band from Belgium and it was the first time they played Groezrock. Awesome awesome show, Ramones style: 1-2-3-4 song, 1-2-3-4 song, rinse and repeat. It's ridiculous how many classic tracks they have. Seriously check these guys out if you are into no-nonsense oldschool punk. | 6 | The Aquabats
Painfully unfunny, puberal and absolutely horrendous. | 7 | Frank Turner
... and The Sleeping Souls. Terrific liveperformance that made me appreciate the new album quite a bit better. There was lots of crowd participation and atmosphere as well. I'm gonna see him again in August, can't wait really. | 8 | Grade
Never heard of these guys, but the description of the band intruiged me. And they delivered! Emo / Post-Hardcore of the good kind (musically, that is). I'll figure out the lyrics when I listen to the albums. | 9 | Title Fight
They are going to make it big - or at least, they should. Massively energetic performance and their raw guitar sound sounded incredible, live. I genuinely liked their albums before, but now they can truly count me as a fan. | 10 | Texas Is The Reason
Best show of the day period. You're a fool if you miss the reunion tour. | 11 | Comeback Kid
I saw the complete show, but was too much in awe because of Texas that I didn't gave it my full attention. They played their debut in the original band lineup, so naturally it was pretty fun. But yeah, I probably would've enjoyed it more if I didn't see them right after Texas Is The Reason. | 12 | Rise Against
Eh, they were ok. Got bored after 20 minutes or so. | 13 | The Dopamines
Start of day 2! Cool band obviously, but they played too early on to make any lasting impact tbh. | 14 | Midnight Souls
It was the last chance to go see them before they call it quits, so I did. Pretty standard hardcore fare, in the vein of Verse and Modern Life Is War. I wasn't all that impressed. | 15 | Iron Chic
The real start of the day for me. Fantastic live band, so now I'm gonna check out all their albums. | 16 | Into It. Over It
I saw a bit of this guy over at the acoustic stage. A bit cliched, sure, but quite intertaining as well. | 17 | Pure Love
This is the new band of Frank Carter, but they're totally different from Gallows. They were cool though, playing a no-nonsense rock show with lots of interaction with the audience. It works, because Frank is such a charismatic and enthousiastic frontman. | 18 | Old Man Markley
So glad I found out about this band on Sputnik, because otherwise I might not have seen them. The biggest party of the whole damn festival for sure, and up there with the best shows I've ever seen. Damn. | 19 | Less Than Jake
I don't know, I should have enjoyed them, but I thought they were pretty forgettable. Too bad. | 20 | Polar Bear Club
They were great musically, but they got a seriously annoying singer. Bailed out a little over half the set. | 21 | The Used
Sunday was definitely much weaker lineup-wise than Saturday. This was another band that was just plain boring. | 22 | Bring Me The Horizon
There weren't any decent alternatives to go see, and a friend wanted to go see them. At least I can now say that I've seen them, when I say they are bad. Well, actually they weren't all that bad, but this was basically a Linkin Park for the youngsters today. | 23 | Flag
So yeah, one of two infamous Black Flag reunion bands, starring Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski and Descendents member Stephen Egerton. And they ruled so goddamn much! I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the performance. No other hardcore band this weekend came even close. My War, Six Pack, Rise Above, Gimme Gimme Gimme and lots of stuff from their early period - this was basically a greatest hits, but I'm not complaining one bit. | 24 | Bad Religion
They were pretty good, but I was never a big fan of these guys. So there... | |

04.29.13 | Thanks man. :]
Oh and in my ranking, put The Kids between Flag and Title Fight. Damn my short-term memory. | kris.
04.29.13 | damn, this looks like such a cool lineup
the dopamines are fun as hell to jam when you're driving around with the windows rolled down, true story | demigod!
04.29.13 | probably gonna be seeing Flag this summer | kris.
04.29.13 | also the aquabats used to be such a great band. it's really sad to see what they've become | MosesMalone
04.29.13 | My sister's boyfriend got to play harmonica onstage with Frank Turner when we saw him opening for the Dropkick Murphys. | clercqie
04.29.13 | - demi: Brace yourself man.
- Kris: yeah, I like the Aquabat's early stuff as well, but this was just pathetic.
- Moses: Wow nice! Which song? | bakkermaarten007
04.29.13 | You're so lucky. I couldn't go (internship and essay)
Edit: and I really wanted to see TITR | clercqie
04.29.13 | I don't think they're that underrated, just not so well-known. | Evreaia
04.29.13 | HOLY FUCK YOU DIDN'T GO TO NARROWS? Those guys teared the fucking place up dude, best band there no contest. (I only wen Sunday) my top 3 was;
Narrows > Midnight Souls > While She Sleeps > bastions > BMTH | Evreaia
04.29.13 | top 5* | clercqie
04.29.13 | "HOLY FUCK YOU DIDN'T GO TO NARROWS?"
Yeah see, I went to Old Man Markley and that was the band there, no contest!
But yeah, some clashes were pretty difficult. | Tyrael
04.29.13 | man I fucking hate The Kids
I hope you had fun! | Aids
04.29.13 | pretty great lineup, right on. I gotta see Old Man Markley, I hear they're a blast live. | kitsch
04.30.13 | weird line up. there are legendary 2nd wave emo bands mixed in with victory records tripe. what kind of fest was this? who curated/put it on? | Evreaia
04.30.13 | Its multiple stages
one stage was pretty damn shitty.. | clercqie
04.30.13 | "so what's your deal with polar bear club's singer?"
Just his constant yelling of frontman clichés like "Jump mothafuckas" and "This is the best show we ever played", yada yada. Can't really stand that kind of rehearsed fake bullshit. If a show is really good, you don't need to get the crowd worked up.
"man I fucking hate The Kids"
Omg, get out!
"weird line up. there are legendary 2nd wave emo bands mixed in with victory records tripe. what kind of fest was this? who curated/put it on?"
The biggest punk/hardcore festival in Belgium. They just about book everything that has any links with punk and all its subgenres. A lot of metalcore lately as well, unfortunately... | Evreaia
04.30.13 | Biggest but not the best fest of Beglgium.
vlamrock and Ieper eat groez alive. | clercqie
04.30.13 | "you also don't need to be a boring frontman who acts like he doesn't care"
Not saying this. Look at Title Fight for example: they didn't resort to some cheap taglines for getting the crowd going, their energy and enthousiasm in playing was more than sufficient.
Never been to Ieperfest or Vlamrock unfortunately. Can't get people to come along. Groez has stuff like Billy Talent to get my buddies convinces to tag along. | clercqie
04.30.13 | Like, Frank Turner's annoying sit-down moment was really stupid as well. | clercqie
04.30.13 | I mean, the music was really good though. I'll go see them again when they come around again, but I just can't stand those assumedly sincere, but blatantly rehearsed speeches that many frontmen give. I could imagine them acting different in America when they play to guys who've seen them plenty of times before, though. | clercqie
04.30.13 | Who's saying I don't think that? | clercqie
04.30.13 | sigh | kitsch
04.30.13 | go to shows alone and meet new friends with good music taste! | slimdaddy
05.03.13 | "Painfully unfunny, puberal and absolutely horrendous."
:( | owen
06.27.13 | Are you going to ieperfest this year? | clercqie
06.27.13 | Can't make it unfortunately. I am going to go see the Stooges that weekend though. | owen
06.27.13 | Ah, well that isn't bad either ;) | clercqie
06.27.13 | They have a great lineup though, this year. Amenra, Black Heart Rebellion, Oathbreaker, Hessian (Church of Ra basically), Loma Prieta, Adolescents, Cro-Mags, ... | clercqie
06.27.13 | Not too sure about the Black Flag reunion. | owen
06.27.13 | Don't forget Jello Biafra & Co; I hope they'll play some Dead Kennedys covers
Yeah I don't know either, Ron Reyes is my favourite black flag vocalist, but still...
I'm sure they'll be fun atleast, beats shouting along to black flag in your room for sure |
