04.01.16 | So...what famous prog epic has a strikingly similar intro to that of Cantafabule at about 1:08? |
zakalwe
04.01.16 | "Atmospheric folk-prog recorded in a cow shed near Caernarfon in North Wales"
How can that not be anything but the greatest thing ever? |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | It's not too bad zak, in my opinion. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and the thoughts of others. The album is a personal favorite of mine, but I am very excited to hear Phoenix. It sounds promising. |
SCREAM!
04.01.16 | "TAAB is undoubtedly the greatest monochromatic, prog folk album"
But First Utterance?? |
SCREAM!
04.01.16 | Just realised TAAB stands for Thick as a Brick so yeah First Utterance will have to stick to second place |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | ^Maybe. If anything, it's not far behind. Love that record. |
AnimalsAsSummit
04.01.16 | Damn this one is going to be hard asf |
AnimalsAsSummit
04.01.16 | First Utterance > TAAB with ease tho |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | I'm inclined to agree, Animals. I think I jam it more frequently than I do TAAB. |
Friday13th
04.01.16 | oh lol forgot First Utterance! Second place is taken. Which is third then? |
Jethro42
04.01.16 | @Friday, about that similar intro, do you mean 2112? |
Jethro42
04.01.16 | ''Which is third then?''
Horslips - The book of Invasion |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | ^Nice. |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | Really digging Cantafabule right now. Filip și cerbul's main riff grooves so hard. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.01.16 | I prefer First Utterance over TAAB actually
If we counting "prog folk" Harmonium and Los Jaivas gotta be there too |
SCREAM!
04.01.16 | Monochromatic prog folk ;) |
smaugman
04.01.16 | 2nd link isn't available for me |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.01.16 | I get the textual meaning of monochromatic, but I don't get it in the context of music |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | Sorry for the link trouble, smaugman. I'm looking around for another one that might work for you. |
bnelso55
04.01.16 | "If we counting "prog folk" Harmonium and Los Jaivas gotta be there too"
Gentleman with the truth. |
Jethro42
04.01.16 | Gentleman with the truth[2]
Another worth mentioning;
Strawbs - Grave New World
Strawbs - Hero & Heroine |
SCREAM!
04.01.16 | "I get the textual meaning of monochromatic, but I don't get it in the context of music"
Referring to album covers is my guess |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.01.16 | oh well, that's pretty specific then |
Friday13th
04.01.16 | yeah, it's the album art. As you can see, my descriptions are pretty predictable.
@Jethro right on, 2112. Horselips is definitely a contender for third. |
SCREAM!
04.01.16 | Maybe I've gotten to know 2112 too well (learn the overture + Temples on guitar) because that intro sounded completely different to me haha |
Friday13th
04.01.16 | @smaugman it's a youtube playlist, but it should work. |
Jethro42
04.02.16 | @Friday; I think the third monochromatic prog-folk album would be...
Gryphon - Red Queen? |
Friday13th
04.02.16 | lol good one ;) that thing is basically neon |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.02.16 | I got exams of criminal, civil and procedural law this week for christ's sake, I want time to check these D: |
Friday13th
04.02.16 | Dude no joke that's gonna be intense. I have that to look forward to next spring. |
Jethro42
04.02.16 | Happy the Man - Crafty Hands
awww it's not a prog folk band...in French we say ''I give my tongue to the cat'' which means ''I give up'' ;) |
Jethro42
04.02.16 | At first I thought I would choose Phoenix, but nothing is certain since Pererin grew on me big time. It took me by surprise cos that pure and direct kind of folk is usually not my cup of tea.
I dig the heavy prog folk kind of Phoenix. I can hear Deep Purple or Uriah Heep at times...and a psychedelic sort of Jethro Tull too. Album is a bit long and it contains a few average songs into the mix. |
smaugman
04.02.16 | i dont know whether i wanna vote for any of these... |
Jethro42
04.02.16 | Finally, Phoenix is nearly perfect. Extremely consistent for an album that long. There are perhaps 2 songs I don't enjoy that much (not even bad), but they are quite short. The electric guitar tone reminds me of Maxophone a lot, and it's a good thing. I gotta jam Pererin again... |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | That's what I'm saying, Jethro! |
Jethro42
04.03.16 | K, Phoenix gets my vote. The songwriting and the arrangements are more enticing to me.
Pererin is well crafted, and the vocal harmonies and instrumental work are simply superb, but the band stays on the same ground and suffers of repetitiveness imo. eg; both songs ''Titrwm'' and ''Ni Welaf'' sound too samey to me. I like both though. My favorites are ''Dechrau y Gan'' and the closer. My least favorite is ''Can y Melinydd'' |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | reminds me I need to add the tracklisting to 1
1:0 |
Jethro42
04.03.16 | Yea it would be practical ;) |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | man that Romanian language is weird haha |
Onirium
04.03.16 | Welsh is a beautiful and peculiar language as well. 2 is particularly beautiful, I often find myself looking for this kind medieval-tinged folk prog. And as far as folk prog goes, it's an absolutely success
1 has a very interesting sound, but I'm having a hard time grasping it wholly. It definitely requires more attentive listens |
smaugman
04.03.16 | i vote for phoenix. just wish it was in english |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | 2:0 |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | I'm probably just biased both as the contestant and as a bass player, but the bass on 1 rules my face. Every musician knows his stuff, but the bass player is like their Chris Squire. |
Jethro42
04.03.16 | ''man that Romanian language is weird haha''
Yeah it looks weird when you read it, but I think it sounds like Italian quite a bit.
@Onirium, I could see you digging Blackmore's Night if you haven't yet.
@Friday, I agree, the Phoenix' bassman knows how to play! |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | Yeah, looks weird is what I meant. It does sound like Italian; hence the "Rome-anian". |
Jethro42
04.03.16 | Yes exactly.
Cantic-lu is such an amazing song. |
Friday13th
04.03.16 | Once again, I agree with Jethro. Pererin is gorgeous and brilliantly recorded though a bit samey. Would be a winner with any other match, but Cantofabule is my favorite. Variety and consistency for 70+ minutes is no small feat, so it gets my vote.
3:0 |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.03.16 | "Yeah it looks weird when you read it, but I think it sounds like Italian quite a bit."
It's a romance language, from the same family of french, spanish, italian and portuguese |
Jethro42
04.03.16 | Ah ok then.
I've learned spanish at college, and I managed to go in intermediary class, but I almost lost it all cos no practicing. It was in early 80's. |
Friday13th
04.05.16 | So...how's it proggin? |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.05.16 | Still full of tests. Prolly will vote on friday |
TwigTW
04.05.16 | I was worried when I read Cantafabule was a "DUBLU ALBUM", but the length isn't a problem. It's very consistent from beginning to end. I hear Beatles influence at 15', Deep Purple at about 22', Jethro Tull at 28', Moody Blues at 30' . . . I won't go through them all , but it's fun picking them out. |
smaugman
04.05.16 | not very much activity in this thread compared to the others |
TwigTW
04.05.16 | It's a quiet prog week. |
SCREAM!
04.05.16 | Been too distracted by Moonsorrow and Babymetal dropping the same day m/
I've checked 1, still need to listen to 2 |
Sabrutin
04.05.16 | Oh man Cantafabule is so good, and I'm only at track 3. |
TwigTW
04.06.16 | When I saw #2 was Welsh folk-prog I thought that would be my choice. The beauty of the Welsh language alone might be enough (no offense, Romania). But now that I've listened to them both, I'm leaning more towards #1. #2 is great, and the Welsh language is beautiful, but there is something about #1. Anyway, I'm gonna listen to them both again and see what happens. |
smaugman
04.06.16 | i got a much harder time getting into music that's not english |
Jethro42
04.06.16 | You risk to miss a lot of good music in this case.
|
Jethro42
04.06.16 | ''I hear Beatles influence at 15', Deep Purple at about 22', Jethro Tull at 28', Moody Blues at 30' . . . I won't go through them all , but it's fun picking them out.''
Nice selection of comparisons, TWIG. I'll try to add some to that list at some point. |
SCREAM!
04.07.16 | I want to like 1 more than I do. It starts off super strong, has some amazing heavy rock moments and some beautiful proggier ones but the length just really drags in parts. |
SCREAM!
04.07.16 | Relistened to it trying to pick out a specific part that I didn't like and came to realise there wasn't really any bad part to it. I guess it just overstays it's welcome a bit around the end. Great album overall.
Gotta give 2 some more spins |
Onirium
04.07.16 | I'm voting for Pererin. While Cantafabule is a great record, I feel it contains a substantial amount of ideas that don't always appear to me as fully fleshed out. But I've never been a fan of hard rock-tinged prog, even though Phoenix have a much subtler way of blending the genres than, say, Kansas.
Haul ar yr Eira, on the other hand, feels like a completely unique record. There's an authenticity in folk prog that's very often absent from typical prog rock, and Pererin embody that better than most. The album has its flaws, but it's really been obsessing me lately |
Friday13th
04.07.16 | 3:1 |
tmthycnnlly
04.08.16 | I'm giving my vote to phoenix but this has been the hardest decision I've made so far |
gagnonov
04.08.16 | @Onirium: agreed
my vote goes to Pererin |
SharkTooth
04.08.16 | 2. |
Jethro42
04.08.16 | Still much quiet in here. Sputnik crashed down again :[
We need some more votes, guys! |
SCREAM!
04.08.16 | I'm torn guys both of these are pretty great in their own way. Leaning towards 2 though since I find 1 a little too long but both are so different with their own great qualities |
Frippertronics
04.08.16 | deuces |
SCREAM!
04.08.16 | Gonna say 2 as well since I enjoy it throughout. However, the really good moments of 1 are better than the really good moments on 2 so it was a tough call |
Onirium
04.08.16 | Indeed, 2 contains only a few really outstanding moments - particularly the wonderful title-track, Ni Welaf yr Haf and the final track - but it's simply very consistent |
Friday13th
04.08.16 | 4:5 |
TwigTW
04.08.16 | This one is turning out to be the hardest for me: first it was Pererin, then it was Phoenix, then it was Pererin again. They both grow on me every time I listen. I'm going to listen to both one more time, and then I will vote--by noon.
Edit: ha-ha, noon here, 16:00 GMT |
zakalwe
04.08.16 | I'm going with phoneix.
The Welsh one is a bit too much like being sat in a music class when I was 7 being sung to by the teacher with some leftie supply teacher doing backing vox.
|
Friday13th
04.08.16 | lol zak
5:5 |
Sabrutin
04.08.16 | I'm voting for Phoenix too. The second track is so addictive.
Btw, the album's concept seems quite interesting. |
AnimalsAsSummit
04.08.16 | Vote goes to Pererin |
Jethro42
04.08.16 | I never get tired of Cantafabule. I will continue to jam it after the tourney. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.08.16 | My vote goes to Cantafabule
Gotta admit that I only had time to listen to each album once though |
TwigTW
04.08.16 | My vote goes to Phoenix.
@ Sabrutin: was reading the story behind Phoenix on RYM, you're right. It is interesting. |
bnelso55
04.08.16 | 2 will always be a favorite of mine, but I think I'll vote for 1 this time. Cantafabule has an interesting concept, a lot of variety and some great riffs. Like Jethro, I know I'll continue to jam it after the tourney. Good pick, Friday! |
Jethro42
04.08.16 | It takes courage to vote for the opponent, bnelso! I tip you my hat :) |
Friday13th
04.08.16 | 9:6
Thanks bnelso! You too man, and I agree with Jethro. Very classy and shows true love of music for its own sake. |
Friday13th
04.08.16 | Yeah the Phoenix history is interesting too. They were censored by those darn commies because some of their lyrics alluded to opposing communism through allegories. |
Friday13th
04.08.16 | The band left Romania hiding inside hollow Marshall speakers! haha classic move |
manosg
04.08.16 | Ugh, didn't manage to listen to 2 yet even though it's got to be pretty special to beat 1, for me. Is it ok if cast my vote tomorrow? |
Snowdog808
04.08.16 | I vote for Pheonix even though I enjoyed both albums.
|
Friday13th
04.08.16 | 10:6
yeah, manosg. Make sure to jam both, but with 10/18 expected votes the outcome is basically set. |
bnelso55
04.08.16 | Ha! Cheers, Jethro and Friday! Class was not necessarily my aim, but I do appreciate the kind words. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.08.16 | Wait I just noticed
This is the same band as that Transsylvania Phoenix one that has some cool hard rock jams, right? |
Friday13th
04.08.16 | yes b4 the name change |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.09.16 | Years ago I loved jammin some of their newer stuff, gotta check more of their albums again |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.09.16 | I love this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5CuEE_GJQw |
manosg
04.09.16 | I said yesterday that Pererin would have to be really special to beat Phoenix for me and it really is. I just love the serene nature of the album and it all feels so natural.
For what it's worth, vote goes to 2. |
Friday13th
04.09.16 | great glad we're digging all these albums
10:7
Meat is the only one left so Phoenix is the winner |
