My Sputnik 1 Year Anniversary List
Truthfully been lurkin on here for a few years now BUT here's to 1 year of actually being a member.
List is my top 50 albums (only listed albums I've had plenty of listens to digest and I didn't repeat artists) |
50 | | Linkin Park Meteora
RIP Chest Bennington... This album will always be one of the most influential albums I ever heard growing up and I still respect this to this day. |
49 | | Tigers Jaw Tigers Jaw
My favorite indie record from a band thats from Scranton so there's obviously going to be a personal connection when you live in the same place the band is from. The vocals on this were Tigers Jaw's best plus the lyrics are wonderful. |
48 | | My Chemical Romance The Black Parade
My Chemical Romance was another one of the first bands I really got into and this is just their clear magnum opus. So much to enjoy and the concept worked really well. |
47 | | Twenty One Pilots Twenty One Pilots
I wish this band didn't grow to have a preteen fan base cause this album is powerful and quite sad. |
46 | | VersaEmerge Fixed at Zero
Imagine Paramore but with more soundscapes and atmosphere thrown in the mix. Plus you even get some male vocals on occasion. |
45 | | Title Fight Floral Green
These guys used to play a lot locally and I'm kinda ashamed I have yet to see em live. This album is their best imo I just love the lyrics and the shifts between slow burner tracks and exuberant ones. |
44 | | The Front Bottoms The Front Bottoms |
43 | | Panic! at the Disco Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!
Probably their darkest album which is probably why I like this one so much, I just think this was probably also their most consistent effort. Plus "Casual Affair" is fantastic. |
42 | | Lorde Pure Heroine
Pop with dark undertones? Yeah I dig this. |
41 | | The Tallest Man on Earth The Wild Hunt
Just a relaxing album, just sit back and let the troubles fade away. |
40 | | Alesana The Emptiness
I know this band gets a lot of hate on here but I gotta say this album had such a fun concept and I really enjoy the execution. The vocals on this were Alesana's best imo. |
39 | | fun. Aim and Ignite
A band that embodies their name to the fullest extent. Nate is an incredible vocalist and there are so many interesting instrumental elements throughout the album. |
38 | | HORSE the band The Mechanical Hand
8 bit and metalcore combine for a bombastic and amusing listen. |
37 | | letlive. Fake History
Jason is such a fucking great performer and his vocals on this are killer. This is just a post hardcore I can always come back to. Lots of catchy choruses and tons of energy. |
36 | | Circa Survive Blue Sky Noise
Anthony Green is one of my favorite vocalist regardless of how high pitch they are. This album see Circa at their most odd but also most catchy and upbeat. I'm not sure they'll ever top this album. |
35 | | FACT FACT
The only japanese band I truly ever connected with, FACT is just so much fun to listen to. This is how you bring catchiness to post hardcore. |
34 | | Lights Siberia
Lights was the first female-fronted electronic artist I got into. This thing still bumps hard and her vocals just breeze through you. |
33 | | Between the Buried and Me Colors
One of the most colorful metal albums I've ever heard. (pun intended) BTBAM release a metal album that is highly enjoyable and showcases so many different ideas without ever feeling too experimental. |
32 | | Pianos Become the Teeth The Lack Long After
Also one of the first albums I was introduced to when I first joined this site. Pianos have since ditched this sound, which unlike many doesn't necessarily sadden me but this album is still my favorite of theirs. I think the screams express the anguish better than the downtrodden clean vocals do. |
31 | | Every Time I Die New Junk Aesthetic
Another one of my favorite metalcore bands, Every Time I Die is just so god damn consistent. The riffs on this are so god damn huge and plus I love Keith's vocals on here. |
30 | | System of a Down Toxicity
Zany metal at its finest. Serg's vocals have always been some of my favorite in metal cause they are so god damn odd that it just stands out from a majority of metal. Plus the instrumentals on this are equally ridiculous, I love Daron's guitar playing and "Psycho" is probably my favorite System song. |
29 | | Senses Fail Still Searching
Senses Fail were one of my first introductions into scream oriented music and I still love this album. I go between this and Let It Enfold You as my favorite album by these guys. I've always loved Buddy's vocals and the lyrics are so great on this one. |
28 | | Blink-182 Blink-182
Aside from Dookie this was one of the first pop punk albums I heard and I love it every time I hear it, would kill to hear Blink having this sound again. |
27 | | Justin Timberlake The 20/20 Experience
One of the first straight up pop albums that I thoroughly enjoyed on first listen. So many great songs that are just too smooth and catchy that its hard not to enjoy this. |
26 | | Enter Shikari Common Dreads
One of the first UK bands I got into, this is just a fun album all around and I agree with a lot of the general anti political stances taken on this album. |
25 | | Green Day Dookie
A classic pop punk album with loads of fun bass riffs so yeah I dig this one a lot obv. |
24 | | Ghost (SWE) Opus Eponymous
Ghost have become one of my favorite bands and although I love all their albums, this one just stands out among the other to me still. From the beginning you are hit with organs playing on "Deus Culpa" which sets the church esque atmosphere and leads into my favorite Ghost bass riff on "Con Clavi Dio". The production and overall tone maintains and only continues to haunt the listener |
23 | | La Dispute Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair
La Dispute at their most vigorous yet also their most fragile, this album was one of the first albums that I was introduced to by my friend who got me into this site. Still one of my favorite albums to this day. |
22 | | Dance Gavin Dance Happiness
Definitely Dance Gavin Dance's strongest album imo. Kurt's clean vocals paired with Will's screams really carry this album in the best way possible. This is also DGD at their most funky which, any of the users who know me would be unsurprised that I pick this album as my favorite as I'm notoriously a sucker for bass lines like the ones presented here. |
21 | | Kurt Travis Everything Is Beautiful
Truly one of the most unique and fascinating albums from vocalist/musician Kurt Travis. Known primarily to have been the lead singer of Dance Gavin Dance for a number of years, this release will surprise many. A thoroughly enjoyable album. |
20 | | mewithoutYou Brother, Sister
Poetic, atmospheric, and dazzling mewithoutYou release what many call their best record. Their blend of post hardcore, indie, and even elements of folk is one of the most satisfying mixtures I've ever heard. Aaron is also an incredible lyricist and really breathes life into this release. |
19 | | Defeater Travels
So. God. Damn. Intense. This is an essential hardcore release as its not only conceptually one of the most moving records I've heard its also instrumentally and vocally one of the most aggressive albums I've heard. Setting the depressing scene of the album with absolute intensity on "Blessed Burden" the album only continues to impress and surprise with tracks like "Prophet In Plain Clothes" which features an acoustic segment that works surprisingly well and not to mention the most emotionally wrenching closer "Cowardice" which leaves you feeling empty and numb. |
18 | | The Used The Used
One of the most influential albums in getting me into music, The Used were at the top of their game on this album. The catchiest choruses, Bert doing some of his best screams, and tight musicianship that I don't think they'll ever touch again, which is unfortunate but nonetheless this is still one of my favorite albums. |
17 | | Danny Brown XXX
Experimental hip hop at its finest. Danny craft one of the most manic and bat shit crazy hip hop albums ever and pushes the boundaries of the genre to its absolute limit. |
16 | | Oathbreaker Rheia
I don't think I've ever heard a female lead vocalist who can scream as insane as Caro does while simultaneously having some of the best clean vocals in the black metal world. The a capella opening "10:56" begins the album in a touching and spine chilling way then punches you in the throat with"Second Son of R." which features technical soaring riffs leading into an explosive ending that you could never prepare yourself for. |
15 | | The Mars Volta De-Loused in the Comatorium
The first time I heard this I was absolutely blown away. This is a lyrical and conceptual masterpiece with some of my favorite vocals. Though for some vocals may be a turnoff in listening to this, I believe Cedric was at his most potent ability here. |
14 | | The Number Twelve Looks Like You Mongrel
Spastic, intense, and technical, The Number Twelve Looks Like you blended multiple genres in a way that is highly amusing and yet cohesive as a whole. If you don't at least find pleasure in "Jay Walking Backwards" then I'm not sure what's wrong with your ears. |
13 | | Tool Lateralus
My personal favorite Tool album. Containing some of my favorite tool songs "Schism", "Parabol" and "Parabola", this album is a clear candidate for this list. |
12 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
One of the most depressing albums I've heard but also one of the most enjoyable listens. Maybe it gets a bit over praised but I believe it is still 5 worthy and so far that hasn't changed for me. |
11 | | Refused The Shape of Punk to Come
Revolutionary in every sense of the word. This album has influenced so many up and coming bands and it's obvious why. There's a fair share of vicious riffs and some killer screams. |
10 | | At the Drive-In Relationship of Command
I wish I grew up knowing this album as it is a post hardcore gem that everyone who is into the genre needs to hear. There's so much energy and fun that comes with the listening experience here. |
9 | | Underoath Define the Great Line
This album has to be my favorite mix of post hardcore and metalcore. Aaron Gillespie has always been one of my favorite clean vocalists and I've always admired Spencer's shear ability to transition between rough singing, fry screams and guttural screams. I think back on attempting to scream like Spencer when I was in a band in high school with some good buddies of mine and I have nothing but fond memories tied to this album. |
8 | | Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP
The first hip-hop album I ever heard and this thing still bangs hard. Eminem wrote his best work here (imo). This album has catchy choruses in tracks like "The Way I am", creative songwriting in tracks like "Stan", an insane posse cut "Under The Influence", and the terrifying and unhinged track that is "Kim". So much to love here. |
7 | | American Football American Football
Emo at its finest, American Football crafted the a perfect record here and I honestly can't think of a single reason to dislike this album. |
6 | | The Fall of Troy Doppelganger
These guys have always been one of my favorite bands and there's so much replay value here paired with some of my favorite guitar riffs ever. Two songs in particular would be"Act One, Scene One" and "Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles". |
5 | | Converge Axe to Fall
Probably 95% of people who see this list will call me ridiculous for putting this in above Jane Doe, but this album is just way more fun to come back to in my eyes. You honestly cannot tell me there is a more haunting closer then "Wretched World". |
4 | | Fiona Apple When the Pawn...
This album got me through one of the most transitional and tough times in my life. Fiona will probably always be my favorite female musician. |
3 | | The Menzingers On the Impossible Past
This album will grow to be timeless as it already sounds like it came from a time before it was released. The clear magnum opus of The Menzingers and it will continue to remind me of home and will always hold a place in my heart, don't care how cheesy that sounds. |
2 | | Nirvana In Utero
This album saw Nirvana at their strongest in songwriting and instrumentation plus you can't deny Steve Albini's excellent production. An incredibly bittersweet album, it ended the legacy of one of my favorite musicians of all time Kurt Cobain, RIP. |
1 | | Third Eye Blind Third Eye Blind
A classic in my eyes through and through. This album has emotional lyrics, catchy choruses, strong vocals, entertaining instrumentals, consistency, and excellent production to boot. There is not a throw away song to be seen here. |
