| Mayday, Mayday
List is my (surprisingly substantial) to-gets for next time I venture to the record store in the next couple of weeks; mostly May releases, but a few olderuns in the mix I'll be keeping an eye for, as well. | 1 | | Basement Promise Everything
One of the aforementioned olderuns, if only slightly. A buddy recommended this band since I liked Citizen and Turnover, and the few songs I have scoped out didn't disappoint. | 2 | | Beach House 7
Being from Baltimore, basically an obligation, but definitely not one I begrudge. | 3 | | Exitmusic The Recognitions | 4 | | Frightened Rabbit Recorded Songs
Being woefully out of it, I didn't even realize this EP existed until seeing the initial news about Scott Hutchison earlier this week, so that was a pleasant surprise at the time; now, it's such an insignificant silver lining in such a goddamned tragedy. Tears will surely be shed upon listening. Hard R.I.P. | 5 | | God Is an Astronaut Epitaph
Kinda fell off these guys around their self-titled (which, good god, that was a decade ago? Yeesh...) but the sample track I heard from this was surprisingly (to me) strong, and the permeating somber tone is one that'll unfortunately resonate right about now in the wake of #4. | 6 | | Hop Along Bark Your Head Off, Dog
Saw them live just this past Saturday, pretty fantastic show with some great, unexpected between-song banter up on stage (for whatever reason, I didn't take them for a super humorous group, but here we are). Much less pleasant was the fact that this album, which I'd planned on buying at the show, was $15 for the CD, which to me seems pretty outrageous. Maybe that's sort of shitty of me, but I did still manage to snag Freshman Year, which I believed to be out-of-print, on vinyl for $20, so I don't feel too bad about "not supporting the band" or whatever. (Plus, I mean, I already went to the show, so...get off my back, jeez!) | 7 | | Iceage Beyondless | 8 | | Jethro Tull J-Tull Dot Com
By all accounts (meaning, chiefly, the quite well-done review on this site), a pretty bad record, but also one of the few my dad (a huge Tull fan) doesn't own, so keeping an eye out for a potential Father's Day gift that, at the very least, will be good for a laugh. | 9 | | Mastersystem Dance Music
See #4. But, since it bears repeating, hard R.I.P. So surreal watching that play out in what was essentially real time. | 10 | | Janelle Monae Dirty Computer | 11 | | nothing, nowhere. ruiner
Not sure I like my chances of finding this on CD, since it seems pretty hard to come by online, but Reaper has grown on me quite a bit over the past couple weeks, so definitely keeping an eye out. | 12 | | Rhye Blood | 13 | | Sevendust All I See Is War
Definite nostalgia grab right here. Still, I'll defend Sevendust as having a much more consistent and well-crafted sound than many of their peers, which has certainly paid off in longevity. They're kinda like the Chevelle of their subgenre. | 14 | | Snail Mail Lush
Don't think this actually comes out until June, but sometimes get a bit lucky with ahead-of-schedule releases at my shop. If not, a good excuse to go back again a couple more weeks down the road. | 15 | | Tortoise Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Not sure what inspired it, but I've definitely slept on Tortoise way too long. Hoping to find this and/or TNT and/or Standards, ideally used and relatively cheap. We shall see. | 16 | | Wye Oak The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs
See #2. | |

05.11.18 | May also try to scope out some Parquet Courts and possibly the new Chvrches, although the majority of the latter's singles so far have been...not great. |
