17 | | Unified Right If I Can't Listen To Unified Right In Heaven...
(2017, Florida hardcore) |
16 | | 200 Stab Wounds Piles of Festering Decomposition
(2020, Ohio death metal) Three tracks of disgusting death metal. I am floored by this release, and I cannot wait for an LP. |
15 | | Blackout Dreamworld
(1995, Memphis rap) Love the samples on this independent release. There is a dark atmosphere to it that demands repeated listens. |
14 | | Outer Heaven Realms Of Eternal Decay
(2018, PA death doom) Death metal to mosh to. Really dig the hardcore influence on this record. It doesn't quite match the quality their demo promised, but it still resonates with my tastes. |
13 | | Mico Caldera
(2015, Columbian sludge w/ grind parts) I wish I was more blown away by this. There is a lot of good stuff on display. Need to check their LPs and see how/if they improve on this dark, crusty sound. |
12 | | Bukka White The Complete Sessions 1930-1940
(compilation from 1990, delta blues) Like sitting down in an old recording booth and listening to a one-man show. Something about Bukka's play style, it sounds like he's going to pull the strings right off the guitar. Going to take a deep dive into this legendary discography. |
11 | | Vince Staples Big Fish Theory
(2018, house rap) Finally got around to listen to this record. Can't believe this guy grew up a couple blocks from where I did. This record is phenomenal. You can tell Vince wants to stand out from his contemporaries by making experimental, danceable rap tracks. Great feature choices as well. |
10 | | Naiad Hardcore Emotion
(2007, Japanese melodic hardcore w/ ambient passages) Flew completely under the radar. This is god-tier hardcore with tons of atmosphere. I wish they released an LP. |
9 | | Gulch Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress
(2020, dark metalcore) Simply put: heavy as balls. I love the drums on this record, the bouncy snare, the constant fills. It feels slightly too short, but it’s hardcore so can’t complain. |
8 | | Endzweck The Naked and the Dead
(2007, Japanese melodic deathcore) These guys are a class act of melodic hardcore. Pure talent and energy. |
7 | | Ninesin The Death, We Will Face
(2009, melodic deathcore from Seoul) For the most part, this South Korean outfit makes rather generic, melodic deathcore, but sometimes I don’t want complex, technical music. Give me the guttural screams, the chugs, and the transliterated English lyrics about suicide. |
6 | | Dead Swans Sleepwalkers
(2009, UK melodic hardcore) It was nice to reunite with the music I grew up with in high school. These guys seemed to get glossed over due to the short length of their songs. I could see how their songwriting can be dull for some, but I think they hit all the right notes. |
5 | | Dead Congregation Promulgation of the Fall
(2014, Greek death doom) 6 years later and still waiting for a new LP from these guys. Absolutely crushing death metal with incredible doom passages. On par with their debut, which I consider an all-time great. |
4 | | Lil Sko U Know Tha Sko
(1998, Memphis rap) Still not sure how this album wound up in my Spotify recommended, but I thoroughly enjoy this lil’ cassette tape. “Miss White Cocaine” sounds like a classic cut. |
3 | | The Repos POSER
(2016, Youth Attack-core) Surprisingly catchy, ugly punk music from cult hardcore legends. |
2 | | No Faith Forced Subservience
(2017, Will Killingsworth-core) Like being pummeled with a jackhammer under swamp water. |
1 | | Bluebeard Bluebeard
(2001, Japanese emo) Something about this mini-CD just clicks. I love the singers voice although I can’t make out what he’s crooning about. Drums and guitars are mellowed out. It’s a shame we never got an LP from these guys before they broke up, but they left us with a tiny piece of magic. |
