_well2020 TOP 100 (2/2)
I was gonna try to do something creative or interesting for my year list and then did not! Instead, I took the data of every album I've rated, deleted everything I have no memory of, and made a chonk ranking. Here's the m e a

10 | | Kashiwa Daisuke Program Music III
#10
Okay, so 2020 has been a *notable* improvement on the overall hmmfest that was 2019. I went back to my list from last year and can comfortably say that anything from 26 up in this list would have netted a place in that one's top 10. Awesome! Can't wait to spend 2021 relistening to all these awesome records! I bitched about the year a lot (there was a lot of trash!) but oh boy did it deliver. Happy!
Anyway, Program Music III is awesome and expansive and sometimes a little weird and almost always overblown and endlessly entertaining and full of that maximalist sentimental OOMPH that Kashiwa Daisuke does so irreplaceably at his best, great scenes.

9 | | Hum Inlet
#9
Incredible comeback from a classic band. These tracks are patient and momentous in a way Hum have never been before, but it still sounds like the perfect follow-up to their crown jewel Downward Is Heavenward. I used to think this band was dated '90s glory. Now I think they're timeless.

8 | | Triangulo de Amor Bizarro oɹɹɐzıqɹoɯɐǝpolnƃuɐıɹʇ
#8
BEST SHOEGAZE OF THE YEAR. This album's haphazard pancake mix of dream pop, shoegaze, post-punk and occasional noise rock is so strange and self-sabotaging: I love it! Lacks the continuity to place much higher, but positively f e s t o o n e d with great highlights.

7 | | Rubio Mango Negro
#7
This one totally came out of nowhere (thnx Ghandhi) and is maybe a liiiiiittle bloated, but for the most part it's one dusky Chilean banger after another. After Two People apparently ate this site's collective sensitivity to downtempo / atmopop, it's no surprise it didn't catch on as much as it might, but hot damn this is a sleeper.
86% |
6 | | Tricot 10
#6
Another lovely surprise! After their most uninspired bleh record (way down below on this list), Tricot turned around and dished out their catchiest, strongest record to date. Wall-to-wall mathrock bangers with great pop hooks, a varied palette and sophisticated musicianship. Ideal scenes.

5 | | Bambara Stray
#5
Oh boy, Southern Gothic Cavian melodramatic narrative stunners all round with clanging guitarnoise and haunting synthscapes for days. Fuck me, I love this record. Easily my favourite post-punk pick from this year, and one of the records I'm mostly likely to dip into afterwards.
87% |
4 | | REOL Kinjitou
#4
Reol + producer Giga P throw their synthpop megaload into hiphop and dish out the best hard banger of 2020. Kinjitou is maximalist as all hell and relentlessly energetic. Huge hooks, great downers, probably the best pop chorus of the year in "un, deux, trois" and a solid dance factor. Yes.
88% |
3 | | Rina Sawayama Sawayama
#3
Albums #2 and #3 came out on the same day and it was probably the best day, even though most of the world was highly miserable at that point. Sawayama is a mercilessly extra identity unpacking in '00s-styled pop lingo so immediate and confident that it obviates subtlety and packs all its nuance into appropriate production stylings and masterclass delivery. Easily one of the most exciting and important records of the year.
88% |
2 | | Fiona Apple Fetch the Bolt Cutters
#2
Fuck me I don't want to write on this record again. Those who get it get it, those who don't can sit down and silently respect it; few artists are capable of statement records this in tune with so many people in such specific ways and we're lucky it dropped in our generation. Fantastic.
90% |
1 | | Seiko Oomori Kintsugi
#1
I feel a little bad not giving the top spot to Fiona, but Seiko Oomori, queen of immaculate say-it-your-way cathartic pop songwriting, dropped in at the start of the month and dished out one of her most confident and collected efforts to be date and I'll be damned if I undersell it by a hair. Still the best and most exciting artist making music today.
