Whitechapel Embrace the Cleans

Whitechapel has released the fourth single and music video "Hickory Creek" from their upcoming LP entitled 'The Valley', set for March 29th. The latest song shows the band experimenting further into a softer approach with the album being a concept to vocalist Phil Bozeman's upbringing.

On the one hand yeah it's ridiculous that incorporating clean singing somehow constitutes experimentation, but on the other Phil is the fucking man and his cleans sound amazing, like a cross between Maynard and Akerfeldt. The real crime here is why is he only gracing us now with these angelic melodies, where was this 10 years ago? This is shaping up to possibly be the best WC record

no it's more like this legitimately sounds nothing like any of those bands. I could see a case for a FFDP comparison or some shit but nothing about this sounds like post-grunge.

at any rate this is the only song like this on the album and a lot of it is some of their heaviest shit in nearly a decade so this is hardly selling out or going BMTH

I feel like the majority of people will listen to this song once and be done with it. But I've gave it a few listens, and it's quite a grower of a song. It gives me a nostalgic feeling of early 2000s alternative power rock/radio rock but the essence of Whitechapel is still apparent. I think I'll enjoy this album

Deathconscious

"if it was for money, why would they remain on Metal Blade and potentially alienate 90% of their fanbase."

well, first of all, Metal Blade is one of the biggest metal labels in the world obviously, and Whitechapel are one of the biggest bands on that label, so im sure Metal Blade are treating them very well. so why would they not stay on it?...secondly, i guarantee if they get big enough, they will jump ship and join a label that makes them more money. and even if they dont switch labels, more fans still = more money. so the fact that they haven't left Metal Blade yet doesnt mean shit.

also, take a look at all the other bands that risked alienating their fanbases and ended up getting even bigger. In Flames, All That Remains, BMTH, etc. if you can get a song on the radio, who really gives a shit if you alienate some of your fanbase? youll have gained more fans than you lost.

"If anything, it's not for $$$ at all."

nobody even called it a fuck you or an artistic statement.

this isn't an In Flames situation. if even half the album was like this I'd agree with you, but this is one song on an album you haven't even heard the rest of. I don't really even like these guys that much and this song is average as fuck, but come on. I'm sure they're aware it has commercial appeal but I'm also pretty sure they didn't write a song dedicated to their singer's dead mother just for a few extra spotify plays. this stuck up attitude of "band wrote a ballad, automatic sellouts!" is fucking stupid.

I was referring to the comment above mine:
“If anything, it's not for $$$ at all.“

Saying they didn’t do it for the money implies they did for themselves, and an extreme departure in sound as a teaser for things to come typically implies that a band is saying fuck it to expectations that surround them. Use basic context clues.

I will gladly admit that I'm wrong if they end up releasing the next Battles, but apparently I'm just not cynical and trve enough to assume that a band that's already commercially successful including a relatively softer song outside of their usual formula on an album containing some of their heaviest stuff in years irrefutably means they're money-hungry disingenuous pop-rock wannabe sellouts.
