St. Vincent brings back the riffs, dammit! I just wish she did so more explicitly than this. 'All Born Screaming' moves in a direction not dissimilar to the vintage rhythm-bending of 'Daddy's Home', but sits in the style slightly more comfortably and with greater, less put-on swagger. Where 'Daddy's Home' was a fun and inventive but somewhat all over the place, this new one feels more focused and dead set on its aesthetic, sounding the most bold and confident a St. Vincent album has sounded in years. If, however, one must find any fault in it, it is the somewhat undercooked song-writing. So many songs here have all the slick presentation of confidence and fresh style, but come just a few inches short of satisfactory conclusion, either through trite build-up, or the opposite lacking release/chorus. So many really fun and infectious songs and yet the tracklist still has mediocre cuts like ?Big Time Nothing? or the awkward reggae pop fusion on ?So Many Planets? that sour the overall impressions.

ALRIGHT LADS, SO I'M NOT THE BEST AT READING AND MOSTLY JUST SKIM THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS (LARGELY BECAUSE I DON'T CARE) BUT FROM WHAT I CAN TELL EVERYONE SEEMS TO THINK THIS RECORD IS "ROCK ORIENTED" OR "RIFF-FILLED" AND FRANKLY I THINK YOU'RE FULL OF SHIT BECAUSE THERE'S NONE OF THAT HERE EVEN THOUGH IT'S SERVICEABLE ALT POP MUSIC. BUT WHAT REALLY BROUGHT ME HERE WAS THE TITLE BECAUSE I TOO WAS BORN WITH A CONDITION THAT MAKES ME SCREAM. SORRY FOR SCREAMING. ALBUM COULD USE MORE SCREAMING.

St. Vincent decides to give her arsty pop rock a well-deserved harder, psychier, and overall weirder edge. It works wonders on the first seven tracks, much less for the last three, more easy going songs.

As someone who hasn't been particularly drawn to St. Vincent's music in the past, her latest album doesn't do much to change that sentiment. While she undeniably ventures into new sonic territories, such shifts have become somewhat expected from her. On "All Born Screaming," St. Vincent explores various shades of alternative and industrial rock, infused with her trademark art rock/pop sensibility. Despite moments of sass and expansiveness, the overall rock instrumentals on the album feel lacking in depth and inspiration. However, for those who appreciate edgy and refined rock music, this album may strike a chord, even if it doesn't personally resonate with me.
