Think this album had one of the best 'sounds' of last year - and it's no more pastiche than Kaputt really, and equally knowing about all that
Songs are really strong - at least 6 of them are blinders. Not sure why you rate them so much lower than other Destroyer.
I just think stuff drops below a 3.30 average on RYM and then that's it, your album gets shot down with arrows quicker than a missionary in North Sentinel.
Album is pretty obviously really really great - esp if you're a Destroyer fan? But I just think if you're not on trend it's an unforgiving world right now and an album like this gets blasted.
Then again no one likes my pick of best indie pop album of this year in the Eleanor Friedberger so prob just my awful taste.

I guess I mean this dude Bejar is up there with the song writing big boys like you Nationals and your Radioheads for me.
He never lets you down too much and his worst work is still better than anything by the mere mortal fodder (too many to mention by name)

I respect you enjoy this, but yeah much as I enjoy albums like Kaputt and Rubies Bejar isn’t quite up there for me - I’ll admit I haven’t really gone back to any of his albums since my first bout of listening about a year ago. :-/

He took a long time to grow on me but now it's got to the stage I'm struggling to think of a Destroyer song I don't at least like
Sky's Grey is definitely the most evocative opening track from last year for me - Goose Snow Cone is my preferred song overall but for setting the scene 'SG' trumped them all
Ahead of a load of other great candidates like 'Nobody Else Will Be There' and 'K' to mention just two more.

His stuff builds up a nostalgia factor for me - return to his work in a year or two’s time and it might just click to a deeper degree

Kaput and Rubies are infinitely better, no doubt

1. Kaputt yes, but that’s album of the decade stuff
2. Rubies is that quality...for 5 songs only imo
3. This is Kaputt’s poor brother but see point 1 again

I'm halfway through and it's yet another step forward from this. It's a lot more subtle and atmospheric, kinda like Kaputt mixed in with some of the musical stylings of this, though far more underplayed than they are here. It's much more focused on atmosphere so far, which I'm absolutely loving.

That was amazing. Honestly, it could very well be his best since Kaputt. It's everything I love about this man's work tightened and executed to utter perfection. It's the album to beat this year already.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear.

You'll love it, Sow. I'm surprises you haven't check this or Poison Season. Highly recommend to when you're finished with the new one.

Poison Season is good but not one of my fav Destroyers tbh.
For me (of the ones I know): Kaputt > Rubies > Streethawk > Your Blues > Poison Season > Trouble In Dreams > Ken > This Night
