My Dad owns every single one of these guys albums as well as over 100 live shows of theirs and a large portion of the Dicks Picks Collection or whatever. He also claims to have been to over 80 of their concerts back when Jerry was still alive as well as a few dozen since Jerry's death.

His obsession with this band makes me look like I barely like music in comparison.

As much as I hate their music, I have to admire the Grateful Dead's fanbase for being probably the most loyal fanbase in the history of rock music. And possibly the most obsessed in an unhealthy way... the amount of Grateful Dead tie dye shirts he owns... the fact that he gave me and my sister stuffed dancing bears as presents once...

He named his dog Jed (after Tennessee Jed) and convinced my Mom to name her dog Scarlet (after Scarlet Begonias) ...

I've heard live versions of the song Terrapin Station like dozens of times throughout my life.

Never heard a full studio album of theirs thank god... but probably because my dad prefers the live to the studio by far...

Live/Dead's Dark Star or the studio version of Terrapin Station?

disagree Titan, although the studio version is a good sounding complete progression. However there is a few live versions you should check out. First, the version on Dozin at the KNick, an otherwise ok show, but the terrapin is solid, a full cycle. Also, I would say the version from chapel Hill in I think 93, the boot is called Another Day in the Sunshine. I think that the 90's terrapins are better than the live versions from the time of the albums release.

The title track is the shit however Samson and Delilah, and Estimated prophet are killer as well, love me some Bobby tunes.

and Ars. try their mid 70's releases starting with Wake of the flood. They may be more your speed, very prog based not just jamming, however if you cant sit through a good dark star, not sure their is any hope for you
