thanks, hyperbore.

i just gave in to temptation and had a chance to listen to the title track from a friend's playlist, and i must say it is one of the most strikingly hypnotic and frightening songs i have ever heard. Emperor have this symphonic beauty about them, but Darkthrone seems to head straight to the core.

i will be looking forward to listening to the whole thing...This Message Edited On 01.17.09

As well you should, it's fucking great. And you're right about them "heading straight to the core" - as with ambient music, all of the band's releases that fall between Soulside Journey and Ravishing Grimness make use of extremely simplistic measures, so it's not surprising how Neptune Towers came about later on. But they do this in a way that suggests something greater than the sum of the music's parts, and that might as well be the definition of "art." Emperor is great as well, but they took a lot less time to start making crap(although their worst was never as bad as Darkthrone's).

well, while im obviously not familiar with the state of quality of Darkthrone's discography, i will say that i first thought they were a punk band(because i had heard FOAD)!

granted, that was before i grew an interest in this genre. This Message Edited On 01.17.09

Don't listen to any of their newer shit wexenhex. Its terrible. Stick to the earlier albums such as this and A Blaze in the Northern Sky and stuff like that. And yeah the title track is by far the best song ever by Darkthrone.

Thats probably the worst black metal album I've ever heard. If you can even call it black metal.

Glad you like it, wexenhex. It actually took me a few listens for the album to click, initially, but once it did I was floored. Under A Funeral Moon is also excellent, and A Blaze in the Northern Sky is great although not as coherent in its vision as the other two. This Message Edited On 01.23.09

Good choice. Also look into all the early shit by Satyricon, Ulver, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Emperor, and Dimmu Borgir if you haven't already.
