5 years to the day since he died. this album, Thriller and Triumph/Destiny from the Jacksons are some of the nicest sounding records ever.
|
| |
five years already? god damn
|

the unconditional love everyone had for him as death tributes flooded in was interesting considering the fact that the dude was basically a joke before he died. not to take anything away from the man - his was a tragic story, and no one can deny his talent - it's just that hypocritically romanticising the deceased is pretty shallow imo. Case in point being Amy Winehouse the other year.

i liked that the focus was primarily on the music rather than the allegations from the last 15-20 years of his life. that would've been in bad taste imo
|
| |
agreed avon i always loved mj hard tho and kinda felt sorry for him like the dude never got a childhood
agreed re winehouse always thought she was shite tho
|
| |
yeah good point chris. it just grinds my gears when the same people who slander him become five second fans again.
and yeah it seemed winehouse was pretty much just a lying, self destructive drug addict, not some tragic icon.

yeah he got kinda forced into stardom and grew up in front of everybody. i think alot of people underestimate how horrific that'd be. and for alot of child stars, their appeal starts to fade as they get older and they kinda go off the rails. but he dropped this album and Thriller and had a hold on pop culture like few before and no one since. so people were constantly at him.
i dunno what the deal was later on in life, he certainly had issues but I feel like sometimes his eccentricities made him an easy target.

yeah there were elements of that, but i think that was in good taste that people held off on that kinda thing. i remember being pleasantly surprised it was so positive. the media seemed to take two angles - to report on how he died and the shady doctor etc and then to celebrate his contributions to music/pop culture.
|
| |
most of the interviews or w/e i saw of him as an adult he just seemed like a child in a man's body

thats actually quite true: either way, the media will be damned if they praise him or damned if they don't. and really, tabloids exist to sell quick fixes and buzz stories so we never should expect great insights into the life of a troubled star and his fall from grace. agreed that it is better to celebrate greatness than dig claws into failures, but as I said my man gripe is with the rampant hypocrisy that arose in the wake of his death. his childhood seems truly awful and no doubt contributed to his numerous eccentricities and insecurities later in life, but if we are (rightly or wrongly) to assume that the allegations against him are true then this is no excuse. regardless, he contributed to pop culture in a way that few have, and thus his music should be celebrated. I just don't think people should be so quick to dismiss the misdeeds of the dead.
