Ha, I was first on the list! Good review as always, dude. I may just give a few tracks from this a go sometime.

I'm honestly going to agree with this review... I was disappointed by this, as well as Five Score And Seven Years Ago. Relient K's just not the same to me as they were when I was 13 lol. They're not good anymore.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

this has its moments but i'll be damned if 75% of the album isn't unnecessary.

1. Forget and Not Slow Down

2. I Don't Need a Soul

3. Part of It

4. Therapy

5. Sahara

6. If You Believe Me / This Is The End (If You Want It)

Would have been a killer EP. And yes, the last 3 tracks on the record could have been combined into one as I illustrated above.

out of curiosity, if they had merged all of the intro and outro tracks with their respective songs so that they were just individual tracks (like oasis, savannah, and baby were ONE track not three) would you have liked this more? admittedly it really pisses me off the broke up this is the end and if you want it into two separate tracks.

well it wouldnt really change my opinion because the music itself is still mostly forgettable...but it might have been enough to save me some frustration and wtf? moments to bump it up to a 3

i'll let you know if this ever grows on me, but i doubt it will if it hasn't over the past year. this isn't a bad album though, so i hope their next album cleans up and refines these ideas...could be very good imo

considering the normal frequency they put out music they should be doing like an ep or something soon, theyve been awfully quiet lately

Good review. Totally disagree though. I can't figure out how you think the music is more forgettable. To me it's so much more interesting musically. The drums are way better, the guitars are much less derivative, and most of the songs have cool piano lines in them that Relient K never had before.

Easily their best album in my opinion. Also, I've always liked cheesy Relient K, but I like the lyrics on this so much more. Sorry about the long-ass comment.

Again though, good review. You supported most of your points really well.

I always thought it was funny how Matt Thiessen wrote a breakup album after he cheated on his fiancee, and in the album he never really takes accountability for his actions.

Doesn't change the fact that the album is great (even though there lots of unnecessary tracks, to say nothing of the intro/outros). Therapy is probably one of my favorite pop rock songs, and I find the lyrics both relatable and a little triggering given my life the past few months.

Never expected this to be an album that would stick with me more than a decade after I listened to it.

I guess I should say he allegedly cheated on his fiancee but I see no reason why his ex-fiancee would lie about it. Next time you give this album a listen, pay attention to the lyrics. The album pretty straightforwardly tells a story of him processing the breakup. It's actually what I really like about the album, since in different stages of a breakup/ heartbreak there are different songs to turn to. Like I've definitely gone on long drives to clear my head like he documents in "Therapy."

Except the end -- the conclusion of the album ("This Is The End (If You Want It)") is him returning to God or some shit like that without really ever showing contrition for his misdeeds. I think he describes the woman he cheated with as "Medusa" as if he didn't have agency in his infidelity 🙄

Also apparently the latest album (albeit, from 2016 lol) is a bit of a spiritual successor to this one? I might check it out.

The latest from 2016 has a ton of corny as hell songs but also some of their absolute best. Flower is stunning and gives me Beach Boys vibes.

Corny as hell is par for the course with these guys, even this album has Savannah and especially Candlelight (although at least here you can rationalize it as fitting in album's narrative journey). I'll check it out, that's some pretty high praise honestly

I definitely know what you mean by Beach Boys. The harmony (chord progression) is super interesting and sounds totally out of the genre. I'm digging it a lot!
