I don't like the review at all. Porcupine tree is a prog band...not a mainstreem band...they could be poppy like you said.. I personnaly think blackest eyes is one of the best song ever. This song make me buy 4 of their records in a week. This album is not their best but it's not that worse...it should get a 4 at least.

Why even start up with that shit, Plath?
Genre arguments > real discussion for some reason :rolleyes:

Porcupine Tree is not mainstream.
More popular than you may think. Once you start seeing their album as a choice cd for one of those free 12 cds ads, and their album is in Sam Goody, they've pretty much made it big.

They're only popular because of their last two albums. The fanbase they've had for the past 15 years has nothing to do with it.

"Trains" is easily one of the most beautiful songs of my generation. The rest of the album gets old fairly fast, though.

This entire album is amazing. Definiately PT's best work. I love the opener of Blackest Eyes, and the eerieness of Heartattack in a Lay By.

I love this album but I prefer Deadwing by a large margin. Deadwing is nine amazing tracks, a totally flowing album, while most of these songs are amazing but it still contains some filler. I need to get some more PT but the record stores near me only have this and Deadwing. Guess I'll have to use Amazon.This Message Edited On 04.25.06

You hit the nail on the head regarding the "awkward" transitions in most of the songs. Deadwing has the exact same weakness. Porcupine Tree need to drop the metal riffs a la Opeth Blackwater Park era (incidentally Steve Wilson produced that album) and focus on their strengths. "Trains" is an absolute gem of a song. Overall, this album just doesn't demand attention and sadly neither does "Deadwing". I don't think this band is that "proggy" at all...

After reading the praise for Deadwing;
"Nine amazing tracks, a totally flowing album".
It would be one of the most overated albums I've come across.
The problem with Deadwing is that it suffers from any strong hooks. It drags too long when it shouldn't, tracks like Shallow, Open Car, Mellotron Scratch lack any identity. They just flat out suck. I mean I really wanted to enjoy this band but doesn't look like it's happening too fast.

The reviewer fails to realize that this era Porcupine Tree really isn't based on complex progressive/psychadelic rock so much as atmospheric pop rock with progressive tendencies.
That said, this album is flawless, combining the concept's atmosphere with a perfect choice in track progression and superb combination of pop rock and progressive stylings. I am also not a new-prog fanboy, as I really enjoyed Sky Moves Sideways nearly as much as this.
This is most definitely not Porcupine Tree's most accessible release either; that award goes to the Brit-Pop-ish Stupid Dream.
