The band is consistent but also very basic in their sound. Never really spectacular or anything.

For me Perfect Storm is the best track on this record, followed by Closure.

How the hell can you not mention the fact there are no clean vocals on this record? That was the biggest change of all between this and the last album.

Album was decent. Nothing groundbreaking, though.

Well that's what I was trying to convey throughout my review: this is solid for what it is, but don't go into it expecting any innovation or anything.

I can't help thinking I'm listening to an Insomnium album while listening to this.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Pretty solid melo-death.

This:

is why I think quite a few people round these parts may enjoy it. Afterall, Insomnium is in high regard here.

insomnium is in high regard in a decent amount of places because they know what people want out of their melo-death, epicness.

Luckily, "Rise of the Phoenix" is a quite acceptable except where the band seems to take a new direction in style, somewhat harder. This is by far the heaviest of the BTD album to date, and seems to channel a lot of personal frustration and anger in music. Gone are the super-melodic choruses that made songs like Deathstar Rising Deadsong and so addictive. Instead, there is an increase in the influence of Black and a step toward the general brutality. That does not mean that the old sound is gone. The melancholy of some of these bands Finnish bands is still there, as grim as ever, just merged with a feeling more anger. The album covers a lot of moods, has an excellent guitar work, is one of the best bands of 2012 for me!

Watered-down is a strong word. "Abbreviated" or "more direct" would be more fitting tags.

Just started going through their discography today. Didn't like the earliest stuff, but starting with Deadlight they seem to be getting pretty good (haven't heard this one, yet).

They were a really consistent band. It's hard for me to even pick a favorite record our of their catalog - besides the debut, they're all 3.5's for me.

Btw, honestly surprised that you didn't like that Wolfheart record more. I thought it was exactly your kind of metal.
