well to me they are less valid. i care more about how the vocalist sounds and the melody than what the lyrics are. not that i NEVER care about lyrics, but they're just pretty low on my priorities.

Well it's tricky subject when it comes to debating lyrics. There's a good article by Jarvis Cocker (who's a stunning lyricist in my humble opinion) which basically says that lyrics are not vital to the enjoyment of the song.

Yeah basically what Yankee said. A song can have really really shitty lyrics, but if the song writing and instrumentation is good I can still enjoy it, but I can't say that works the other way around.

the lyrics are what make this a classic so if you "don't care about lyrics" I don't know why the hell you'd listen to this

"What a beautiful face I have found in this place that is circling all round the sun. What a beautiful dream that could flash on the screen in a blink of an eye and be gone from me. Soft and sweet, let me hold it close and keep it here with me, with me.

And one day we will die and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea.

But for now we are young, let us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see. Love to be in the arms of all I'm keeping here with me, with me.

(...)

What a beautiful face I have found in this place that is circling all round the sun. And when we meet on a cloud, I'll be laughing out loud, I'll be laughing with everyone I see. Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all"

if the brilliance of those lyrics eludes you then I honestly feel sorry for you

well like i said, it depends on the artist/genre. not too concerned with shoegaze lyrics since it's hardly the focus of the music. something like The Tallest Man On Earth, on the other hand, is extremely dependent on lyrical content

to me good lyrics can def heighten a song and give it more depth, but a good song should still be good without understanding or caring about lyrics. i dont want to hear a guy recite nice poetry over mediocre music. the same way I dont want to hear a good rapper who has no flow over shitty beats.

but yea this is why im not a huge folk fan. luckily this has enough weirdness to it that I dig.

"but a good song should still be good without understanding or caring about lyrics."

dude this is completely misguided. be a "music over lyrics guy", that's fine, but saying that a good song should have musical merit separate from the lyrics is so dumb. people like different styles of music for different reasons, and liking this, The Mountain Goats, The Weakerthans, etc. etc. etc. is almost always entirely due to the lyrical content. The Mountain Goats have never written any brilliant music (arguable but let's go with it), but their lyrics are insanely brilliant, and they're my favourite band. Are you really saying they don't deserve this honour because the music isn't anything special? Don't be dumb.

I could do the same kind of thing you're doing and dismiss all music without vocals (or with vocals too harsh to make out) as simply "not as good" as anything that has decipherable lyrics that are decent.

i like the mountain goat's music. simple, catchy...and brings out the lyrics (which aren't too important to me either...but they're a nice touch)

yeah exactly. it's ok to not care that much about lyrics, but to actually try to shit on albums such as this one because "the music isn't that good" is really really stupid. accept that it's not your favourite style of music and go jam some Rush or whatever.
