Zest Mordant:

wow, the whole purpose of the review was to try and separate the album's content from what 90% of the posts have been about.

I agree. The point of a review is to discuss the music within the album not the intent of the artists or any of those specualtions that people make from a far from reading second gossip. This review did a good job at analyzing the songs which is what it was supposed to do. These posts have done nothing that they should do which is add input about the songs and production value (i.e: how good does it sound? does it sound like kids beating pots and pans in a garage or like a real album?). Shame....

and yes. This album is fantastic if you are a fan of the original keasbey nights or if you are new to both Streetlight and Catch22. The music is very well written and most parts flow together greatly. The sound of the album is fantastic too, every instrument is heard and sounds almost perfect. The talent on the album is also something that I don't believe has been matched by any other third-wave ska bands either. A solid album performed by solid artists.

Kalnoky is a lovely person. He re-released this album as Catch 22 were going to re-release it. Why should they be allowed to make money from a CD he entirely wrote and established them with, before being thrown out of the band?

He also did this to confuse the hell out of everyone, and piss a lot of people off. Nice job Tomas.

Now he's got this off his chest we can look forward to a whole heap more of amazing covers and originals from him.

As for this album in particular, I enjoyed listening to it. Somewhat less raw oomph than the original, but it has a beautiful rich sound to it which they obviously couldn't capture the first time around (they were going for a different type of energy then, which worked just as well).

In all honesty, I thought that this version was better than the original by Catch 22.

But that's just me.

I think it was good that you didnt write this as a comparison in some ways, but a comparison is also required. Very well written all the same.

I like the new versions of all the songs more EXCEPT "Giving Up, Giving In"

The tighter horn section is what sells it for me. The horns were in no way sloppy on the original but they still mananged to make them better. In addition to new solos on most of the songs that had them before.

And Streetlight is supposed to have a new album of all new material by the end fo the year so it's not like they've stopped writing and recording. They've been debuting new songs at shows as of recent.

The old one was by far the best Ska album I have ever eard and one of the best of the decade. Good intro and good review.

The horns do sound like MIDIs at points, kind of ruins it for me. And I miss the obnoxious snare tone of the original, though its still there... kind of. Overall probably better than the original and obviously much cleaner, I'd much rather have new Streetlight material though obviously. This Message Edited On 07.08.06

Bah, SM is a great band, but I would rather them have come out with some new material. Don't get me wrong, It is a good CD for those of you interested in buying it, and I do think it is better than the original C22's Keasby, but I want some new material from these guys.

I hope a lot of you are joking. The point of this CD was not to "stick" it to Catch 22. This album was not made so they could make money off of something Catch 22 did (even though Tomas wrote it). I don't understand how Streetlight Manifesto fans get pissed off at what they did. Victory was planning on releasing this album with nothing but new cover art. You would have actually had something to bitch about then. SM rerecorded the album in an attempt to make it better instead of just leaving it the same.

As steerpike said, if thy release a new album this year ill be happy. And it was just worth the 15 bucks in my opinion, but 10 would have been alot more satisfying for this cd.

But great review, though i have to disagree with a few of the opinions you voiced. This Message Edited On 07.23.06

the interview in the end of 1234 1234 says it all; Victory was going to re-release keasby. Tom was never completely satisfied with keasby in the first place, because (as good as the origonal was) the sound quality was shit. further more, he says that he hates it when labels re-release old cd's just to sucker in kids who allready own the cd to buy it again just for two or three bonus tracks. when he found out about victory's intentions, he offered to re-record it as streetlight. keasby nights is finally the way Tom wanted it. the quality of this record is great, the horns are thicker, his voice has matured, the instruments complement each other better than on the origonal. just like it says on the inside booklet, dont take it for any more or any less than what it really is.

that being said, i cant fuckin wait until their actual sophmore release, i just hope its sometime soon. NJ ALL THE WAY!

I agree with you i thought that the album had a great over all sound even though there might have been some problems behind why Kalonsky made the album and whether hes a dick or not!!

good review

Blah, there is an awful amount of bitching going on in reference to this album. The cafuffle over it's release it both amusing and annoying at the same time. As many have pointed out, thankfully, it is explained why they re-made this album at the end of the album.

Infact, he even mentions that he offered to re-record the album with the guys from Catch 22 but they turned it down. I whole heartedly agree with his decision because re-releases that haven't been changed in anyway are bloody annoying and nothing more than a waste of money.

This version sounds better and crisper than the original Keasby Nights and as a result I'm glad I have this version. It's probably not worth buying if you own the original already though unless the production annoys you a lot on the previous version.

The next album should be interesting to say the least, especially considering it's supposed to be much darker.

Yeah, get the original if you like listening to a high school ska band recording an album with potential on a fucking alarm clock.
