it's clearly getting your panties in a knot because it is not "normal" = mission accomplished

her aesthetic is looking as repulsive as possible?

why is it that when grindcore bands work within repulsive aesthetics people think it's awesome but as soon as a female pop star does it it's suddenly a no-no?

women shouldn't always have to be pretty. they shouldn't always be glamourized, sexualized and idealized. they should be able to be as unkempt and aggressive as men often are.

Miley used to be held to the same standards as the rest of the pop world, and now she's pushing against them.

"why is it that when grindcore bands do this people think it's awesome"

What are you talking about? Grindcore covers are vomit worthy half of the time

you guys are like those people that stand in front of paintings of giant red squares in museums and say shit like 'i love how it subtly conveys anger and rage.' trying desperately to infer some kind of meaning.

if she wanted to attack the 'industry' and spread a message about 'being yourself' i don't think smearing cake all over your face is the way to go. tbh it just seems like her further making herself seem repulsive. if that is her message then it's contrived and stupid

@Ars: I mean I'm not a fan of them either but that kind of thing is definitely more accepted as part of the culture of the music and the image of the artists.

I can't believe such a simple concept can elude y'all so much shm

Gyro: the difference is, this is pretty fucking obvious. You'll need to be pretty fucking stupid to not get it. Either that, or not understanding it because you don't want to

yeah ocean you're talking about two very different things. this is just ugly looking for the sake of spreading some contrived message. (some) grindcore bands just use gross ass imagery purely for shock value without any kind of underlying message

@Gyro: in her defense the entire idea for this album is probably Mr. Coyne's fault more than her's and he's always weird for the sake of being weird...

or maybe just maybe it's over your head and you're too closed minded to accept that possibility

There's meaning in everything, Gyro. Especially in pop culture, absolutely everything is subject to interpretation.

I think Gyro gets the obvious message, he just thinks it's a poor way of showing it (sorry to speak for you Gyro please correct me if I'm wrong )

I'm losing more brain cells from reading about you guys arguing over her aesthetics than the album itself.

So even a simple concept can elude simple people like that, huh

Guys, nobody's saying this is a super profound concept or anything; she was inspired by something, and made an album of it. Simple

Gyro: "so if i posted a picture of myself with pizza and whipped cream and shit all over my face on facebook people would be like 'nice message about being yourself bro.'" -- yes, that's exactly it. You can do that, and if you do it right, you can perfectly convey that message no problem

@Ars and there is an argument for that, but history shows that one of the best ways to make a point is to provoke a strong reaction (positive or negative). That's exactly what Miley's doing.

i mean people can derive meaning from anything - this is especially true of art. and honestly, there's nothing wrong with challenging yourself to see underlying messages in things. it's probably a good practice. but in this instance it just seems sort of forced to me, and poorly conveyed. image isn't important and it shouldn't be such a prominent issue in pop culture, so like, i get her trying to represent that but she could have picked something better. maybe something that doesn't just look terrible for the sake of it and has a more clear-cut message. whoever it was who said it's about 'being yourself' is flat-out wrong i think. maybe that's an extension of her overall message in music, but this image just seems to say 'be as ugly as you want'
