"In my opinion, they were losing their luster. He didn't want to be death metal anymore. He wanted to be Nevermore."

That they didn't want to be death metal anymore already seems pretty evident on this album to me.

"formular". OK, are you British or Australian? :D
anyway, nice review, agreed with everything, especially about the predictability and how all the solos are in the same mode (it's either Phrygian or Locrian). I'm also among the people who don't think that Death is that special. Lack of Comprehension and Cosmic Sea = best songs.

Death Metal: Death's version of metal. When you look at it like that, they were always "Death" metal.

I think Schuldiner just wrote what he was feeling. He had a vision for each of his albums for what it should sound and feel like.
It's crazy to see a review that's lower than a 4. That's absurd lol

Anyone with a rating lower than 4 obviously have a lack of comprehension. haha

Surprised nobody else noticed that before, especially since i did the exact same mistake in my slayer review as well. I am from germany actually. In german 'formular' is actually a word but it does not quite mean the same thing as 'formula' in english.

I would not have bothered writing the review if i simply agreed with the general consensus on this album. I wrote it precisely because i felt like this album could use an elaborate review with a more critical view.
Sure, schuldiner wrote what he was feeling. And what he was feeling was not in line with the usual death metal view.

If you listen to the original Death Metal bands and their classic releases, you will find definite overlap in the ideas and concepts being explored and also in how they are being explored. There is little overlap with this album however, which is why I am suggesting it isn't really Death Metal in the original sense. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, necessarily and I am not really saying it to devalue the album.
