Binging on The Blue Nile since reading this--I see that Hats went to #12 in the UK, with three hit singles. It definitely wasn't that kind of hit in the US.

Cheers Dan, one slipped the net there
Twig, pleased this hit no.12 - the British public knew their stuff back in those days. Now it's all X Factor.

used to always look to the British charts for 'better' music--not sure what happened there ;-)

Pleased you like this, you're a bit of a Sput authority on 80s albums
I've listened to Let's Go Out Tonight close to a hundred times since first listening to the album five months ago, that one hits me hard every time. A top 10 song of all time for me now.

i appreciate that haha, and yea this is absolutely fantastic... i am not one to favor this particular style of music usually, but like you said here, this is a kind of rare "portal album". you fleshed out the review really well, and this definitely needs it. the atmosphere and slow build nature of the compositions along with the meticulous production and heavenly/ghostly melodies make for a listen all its own. this truly has an atmosphere i haven't quite heard before but is still so.touching and oddly familiar... very unique, nocturnal and dreamlike

doof if you haven't heard susumu hirasawa yet you should check that dude out. i have a feeling you'd enjoy his work. my personal favorites by him are 'sim city' and 'siren'. i consider both of those albums to be completely coherent auditory worlds, akin in execution to the urban isolation and beauty found here.

this album is an achievement of melody and atmosphere. never would i think i'd sob like a baby hearing a song that describes a simple late night evening, with its main chorus being a very simple declaration of 'let's go out tonight'. like shit man..... it takes a true genius and extremely emotionally connected person to pull stuff like this off. guess i should really check out these guys' debut.

Agreed, 'Let's Go Out Tonight' is an all time top 5 song for me, my other half demands we listen to it last song of the night a few times a week now, it's an absolute emotional devastator and stunningly beautiful all at the same time.
The debut is worth your time but isn't quite as special, at least for me

This is one of those albums that stands on its own. It's unique. You can see only hints of it on their first album.
