I like System but I think it's a bit too anthemic for a National opener; it'd be all downhill momentum-wise from there. Works better right where it is IMO.

This one really takes its time to unfurl and reveal everything, much less immediate than TWFM but almost as good.

Plane you should read the American Songwriter feature I mentioned in one of the other threads for this, I think you'd find their songwriting process interesting.

glad they're good again twfm was so bad this rules tho

The opener feels more like a "we're back" statement than an introduction to the album so I get the misgivings. It's a warm embrace for sinking into the couch rather than a preview of what's to come. I love it.
The closer on the other hand I'm finding to be quite lackluster. Ending the album with what's effectively a song compilation is an odd concept for this band, and it just ends up feeling like a preview track on Soundcloud with short snippets of every song. Doesn't give the record any sense of closure, just seems to peter out (which fits the thematic purpose I guess).

the closer is pretty easily the most unique-sounding thing they've ever done

The closer is really more of a mood piece than a song. Matt had misgivings about it too but eventually decided it was worthwhile, ironically, only after using part of it to write Guilty Party.

i'm going to try and make my case hungover, so apologies in advance for any errors in argument, pacing, syntax, but: the subdued tone and the subtle sadness, the reconciliation of the thematic inquiries of the album, the sanding of the jagged edges peppered throughout the album: opener should be the closer. game set match.

i can see it but like what would be the better opener
and then where does the title track go??
|

The opener being the closer would be so depressing tho. I couldn't leave on that note. I love that the title track ends it because it's a bit more hopeful and also feels more conclusive, as we get to see where the album title came from, right before it exits

Turtlehead should have been the opener and closer and poked out between every other album cut
