I don’t think anyone is saying this is a really bad record, there’s just a strong willingness to not overrate this particular album

I simply loved Upon Our Spiritual Deathbed...don't ask me why, i'd feel really stupid. Beautiful track for me. I also think you 3 is a bit too harsh for the quality of this, but you prob did some inside discog comparisons.

Yes definitely, and no also. I would consider this album a perfect entry into the band for a new listener. It’s accessible and perfectly acceptable amongst the realms of consistently good metal. Primordial’s other record’s are built off planes of majesty and better atmospheric quality than what’s on offer here. Add to that the comparisons to other black n’ roll bands that do that particular style so much better (Anciients just for an example) and the par on which I rate becomes a solid variable. For the record I still think 3/5 is a good score and I do like this record.

In saying that I’ve also tightened up my rating criteria this year, making my 4+ Scores all the more special.

OK i get your point...my 4's are sometimes a bit of a mess lolol but most of them are more likely to go down to 3.5 than actually up to 4.5. So my 4.5's are always pretty special. They mean I'm really loving them after several listens and becoming like a fan of the album or the band you know...but i get you have other type of responsibility.

Yeah I get what you’re saying. These days I look at some of my old scores and adjust them to fit how I feel currently.

I do have a soft spot for nostalgia, especially for albums released while I was still at school but these days so much has changed, so much is musically possible and I don’t want to box myself in with ratings that don’t mature as I do (much like that wine we keep talking about).

oh for sure. That "school thing" are our roots man...somethings i got there are so cheesy, but I stick to them. But I'm a recent user, so I did and still do some ratings according to what felt during that school&university times.

In the meantime all the "new stuff"(new or old) i'm rating, should sometime be reviewed...

Moments of this album are on par with some of the best Primordial has done. Unfortunately, these moments aren't as common as on previous albums. Still a really good album, just ever-so-slightly disappointing that they didn't reach for the heights they've achieved in the past.

Yeah it’s a good record, could have done more with the standard Primordial fare though

I liked the singles before the full release, they did make me wonder where the album was going. Now that the record is out I’m left wanting.

I agree with Spirit, to be honest. Every time some tells me that a Primordial album is among the best of its respective year, I can usually think of 15-20 (if not more) albums that were better.

There’s always the chance you’ll enjoy this at a Hawks-like level I guess
