Yeah I agree with Steak. The more I listen to it the more I appreciate it for what it is. The lyrics are a step down from their previous endeavor, but there are still some big moments on this. solid 3.5 in my book.

"Yeah this is about as 3.5 as you can get." [2]
Pretty sure I had this exact thought while listening.

Man i wanted to love this but it didn't click with me at all. Listened through 2 times an haven't been back to it since. Such a step down in all departments. Except the cleans, while they sound better as a whole the melodies are bad...like Spencer from periphery bad. An the lyrics are almost worse. There's bits an pieces of good moments in some songs an they don't even last or build upon them. Such a disappointment coming after a brilliant album prior. THIS took 4 years...wow.

Awe Blush, love you. I didn’t “go” anywhere - just been massively short staffed at work, 60-70 hours a week sorta thing. All the time to listen to music, no time to write. Luckily I have a pretty decent buffer of reviews to keep pace with the team.

The simple fact that;
"What the hell do you want from me?
Honestly, leave me the fuck alone"
is a lyric on here brings it down a whole point for me. Sounds like what my edgy 16 year old brother would write.
Loved the lyrical story telling on the last album and unfortunately it's taken a massive nose dive on this album. I like a lot of the songs however, Jukai is probs up there with most songs on The Amanuensis but Chris sounds so phoned in at points and fuck me the kick drum is just way too loud, it blocks some of the killer riffs from cutting through. And when a drummer points that out you know your mix is fucked. There's way too much treble as well, whoever mixed this needed to seriously tone it down around the 2-5k range cuz damn I can't even listen to this on high volumes without shredding my ears, the cymbals just shhhhhhhhhhhhh too much.
Overall great record tho but that scream in Vanta at 1:19 is laughably bad, literally sounds like me vomiting this morning.

Not going to lie, I actually enjoyed hearing them for once. Those bastards usually get washed out in the mix in modern production.

the first three songs are great but the album just starts to die after that

Certainly like the non-singles more than the actual singles but I feel like there is a distinct lack of audible bass in this release; one of the qualities that I think defines Monuments sound more than their counterparts.
I don't think this album was a bad as I worried it would be but definitely a disappointment.

I'm fighting to like this. Ivory, Mirror Image, AWOL, Vanta and Jukai do the job and I want to like the others. But, while the weaker songs on this may be stronger than, say Atlas or The alchemist (just didn't click with those 2 from the Amanuensis not thst I dislike them entirely) the stronger Phorensis tracks don't hit the highs of Origin, Jinn, Quasimodo, and to some extent, creator/destroyer.
|
| |
Saying that; even though I like AWOL, the key change and vocals at the end annoy me...

Yeah Ivory is a heavy hitter. Once I came to terms with the lyrics on this thing and just had fun with it it wasn't too bad.

Which is disappointing because it's one of the songs the band was most passionate about. I agree, it's probably the biggest let down on the album. But I agree with you....
"FUCK DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!?!!?! LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE"
