Hawks, you must check Scorn Defeat. It's their most black metal album.

Stoked to jam this. Good review. Bold claims I hope are true!
I very much enjoyed Hangman's Hymn and In Somniphobia, but didn't really care much for Scenes from Hell, and Graveward especially

Guess I gotta hear this

Imaginary Sonicscape is considered by many to be their best. It's pretty out there stuff, there's some metal elements mostly in the vocals, but it's weird avant garde fusiony stuff that just needs to be experienced.
Hangman's Hymn is more thrashier with some really great symphonic elements thrown in.
I would recommend both of those as a starting point for getting into the band.

I listened to In Somniphobia first, but probably the best start is Imaginary Sonicscape, then the 1990s stuff and then the rest. Or just listen to the one with the album cover you like the most, that always works.

Oh yeah, Hangman's Hymn is also a good start and an "easier" one but Sigh in general are pretty out there so I'd recommend more starting with something... Out there.

checking this out

Review sounds great and makes me want to check this, but they've always been trying way too hard, so I'm torn.

How do they try too hard? Lol
|
| |
They throw a bunch of things into one moment/song without giving thought to whether it works. A lot of the time, it doesn't.

Yeah that’s not true lol. And how would you know what they put thought into???
|
| |
Well: If they had put thought into In Somniphobia's arrangements it wouldn't sound like they didn't know what they're doing.
|
| |
That's cool, can you link me your avant-garde black metal album for comparison so I can hear someone who know's what they're doing?
|
| |
coma, shut up.

What does my album have to do with theirs? I don't have to do anything to be able to form an opinion, and this is my opinion: Their music tends (and tends, that's a relativization) to be overcrowded and directionless to the point of being grating. I get that's something that people like about them, but it doesn't make me feel anything.
I'd also like you to cook the next meal you don't like.
