i felt the same way about 5SOS

it just seemed like if you started a boy band but just willingly slapped the pop punk label on your music you'd gain popularity in the same juvenile mall punk crowd who'd hate on the jonas brothers and big time rush

One of my best friends from high school actually drove down to TX back in mid-2011 to play bass for these guys for like two months, and said that the guys in the band at the time, were the most obnoxious people he had ever met. lol

I believe that. I know that they bitched out one of the YouTube reviewers who had always said nice things about them when he was only slightly critical of one of their albums.

Some of the stories that he shared about the experience definitely made me overly cautious about the notion of making a move that is that far away, to meet up with random musicians from social media. I don't think that he would have done it though, if it hadn't have been for the fact that our home state was (and sadly still is) basically dead when it comes to opportunities to gig and play music. They also didn't have any music uploaded at that time, so it was a total gamble.

I can't imagine this being anything other than totally hideous...just had to share that anecdote

It had to be a great learning experience, at least. Sputnik hates them, but these guys draw decent crowds. It's not like playing in front of 12 of your friends in a bar.
