I've heard both Grandfather and Foundry a few times each (have them both rated as a 4), but never really given them enough time to fully absorb their music. They do feel like a group I might eventually fall for though, so might be time for another go.

Oh okay cool. Yeah, Grandfather is easily my favorite (and a classic for me, personally), Foundry is like the solid follow-up that proves their debut was no fluke, and Antarctica In Color experiments with a wider array of sounds/styles but isn't quite as consistent or memorable (but it's still great!). In my opinion, the band is at its best with both Mason and Christian (AIC was essentially a Mason solo record) singing sprightly harmonies about spirits/ancient folklore/existentialism over pristine pastoral sounding acoustics, but I know that's an awfully specific vibe and the band has every right to want to branch out, haha.

---I'm at the gym finally ready to listen to this and it's not even on apple music---

Yeah, this release was supposed to go live today on streaming platforms. There must have been some kind of delay. I emailed the band letting them know.

---these are leftover songs? are they still good?---

I think so. It doesn't live up to Grandfather or the heights of Foundry, but there are definitely gems to unearth (my personal favorites: Family of Fears, Underneath the Ivy Fields, You and Your Sainthood, Canossa, and Lowlife). I'd say Family of Fears (Antarctica In Color b-side) was the most pleasant surprise, because I knew the Grandfather b-sides would rule by default.

Here's where you can listen to this compilation:

https://tigersontrains.bandcamp.com/album/antiquities

Through no fault of the band, the album's upload to major streaming services is delayed.

If you enjoy this artist's music, a purchase is always a wonderful way to show your support. But if not I'll re-post here when the release is on Spotify etc. so that you can stream the songs in a way that generates minor revenue.

Hope you all find a handful of gems here like I did!

I had no idea how delayed Spotify and Applemusic could be until recently. A friend of mine has had an album ready to go for over 2 weeks but is still in the release queue and doesn't know when it'll hit.

Very unexpected and a welcome addition to the mix. I wish they would re-release some of their super early demos too. I’ve managed to find most of “The Tongue-Cut Sparrow…” and “The Equator!” But never heard anything off “Songs By and About Whales.”

6 of the songs have been previously released in some form, but it’s nice to have them together. Lowlife and Canossa are standouts to me from the “new/never released” tracks. I hope this leads to a new album - Souveneer has been great but I miss the folk too lol.

Well said. Somehow I've never heard any of those pre-2010 EPs haha. Maybe I should ask @theyearfifteen about that 🤔

There is a YouTube page out there with 2 of the early EP’s on it. Not sure what the policy is about posting links on review pages so I sent it to your shoutbox. If it’s ok to share I’ll be happy to post it here too

I've been listening to this band a lot this week. This is a very impressive collection, I'd put it on par with Foundry and Antarctica In Color, only Grandfather is clearly better as a whole.

Thanks KingBoots8! I'm definitely going to spin them but I've heard wonderful things about Songs By And About Whales so I'll have to hunt that down as well.

Also I just checked and this is up on streaming services now! Band deserves as many spins as you're able to give :-)
