I know it's not exactly the biggest issue here but why does the front cover have Pop-era photos of Edge, Larry and Adam while Bono's photo looks like it's mid-80s...

yeah okay that rendition of the fly is wtf, especially considering this gorgeous ethereal rendition of the chorus (1 min in) is something they're capable of lmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lygFjHzTho

Great review Zack. That vid is pretty embarrassing. Sad to hear that about Larry too, didn’t know his health was declining. Question for you or anyone else who sat through this whole thing, you brave souls you, what would you say are like the 5 best songs worth hearing?

Eno and Lanois without a doubt produced most of their best albums and songs, so I consider their involvement a big contribution to the band’s brilliance and best work. Brian Eno’s own music from 1973-1985 including collabs is all fantastic.

I think it’s funny how insecure and funny U2 act about their own legacy, considering they were the biggest band in the world for two different generations essentially, which no one else has done, and had the most successful and lucrative world tour of all time, the 360 degree one, which I saw them on in 2009.

That live version of The Fly is great, prefer it to the studio version. Would be nice if there was an official recording of it. I wish they had released a live album of the newer material in the late 2010s, I feel like the songs would sound better with more energy to the production. The best version of You’re the Best Thing About Me was live on Fallon, and the music video for The Blackout is a live version that’s superior to the studio version. Same with the live at the BBC version of Lights of Home with a full orchestra. And The Little Things That Give You Away (Spotify Singles version). Basically Songs of Experience should’ve sounded punchier and more stripped down I guess.

The songs I mention in the second-to-last paragraph are the ones worth hearing here imo. I don't disagree about the boost they get from Eno & Lanois, it's wild to me there are (certifiably crazy) people who think War was their final good project.

On the topic of that live version of The Fly, I think part of my disappointment from this stems from how certain songs like that which evolved into a direction that would fit this project ("Staring at the Sun" done acoustically, an elongated encore-closing "40" etc.) seem like no-brainer inclusions here but they're either squandered or absent altogether from this actual tracklist

This could be direction they will take if Larry is not capable of drumming again and Adam not interested to continue. I will take this over shitty overproduced wannabe rock bangers they were trying to create in last 10 years.

alright the new Streets was so bad I nearly gave up on this lmao but the reworkings of Stories and 11 O Clock are actually pretty cool. enough to pique my interest for a bit longer

kinda wild that Edge's voice sounds better than Bono's in 2023

the deep cuts here are generally actually really well done. 11OC, Stories and Dirty Day are great renditions

except for Get Out of Your Own Way which is lmao, a lot of the new era stuff generally works too without the insane overproduction on the albums. Invisible, Little Things and Lights of Home are all better on here tbh

its really only the big single renditions that suck but boooooy they suck hard. Desire is truly embarrassing lol
