Pos bc this is a good read.
But your other AJR review was far too sensational and negative and I’m assuming you did the same thing with this album.
These guys are average at best but you act like they’re the worst thing to ever happen to music

Don’t drag Azaelia Banks’ twitter into this
At least she knows how to bring the entertainment

no idea who this is but that artwork rules.

Album Rating: 2.5
Well-written review but I wish I had whatever skill it was that allowed everyone else to hate AJR. To me they're just fine. This album is just fine.
But then I wouldn't think this album was just fine.
Little AJR reference there. About as smart as AJR's own. Actually I'm fronting, I thought the lyrics in opener The Maybe Man were pretty clever.
This LP is maybe a little flat, certainly not as good as OK Orchestra. I dug 'The Dumb Song' and 'Hole in the Bottom of my Brain. 'Touchy Feely Fool' is improbably not as cringe as an AJR song named 'Touchy Feely Fool' could be. 'Inertia' and 'Turning Out 3' were both strong but with atrocious choruses. Actually the choruses as a whole were the weakest part of this album, and the reason it's not a 3 for me. 'Steve's Going to London's has a very interesting middle but abhorrent choruses.
PS I'm sorry that they lost their dad but 'God is Really Real' fucking sucks. The last thing I need on my saccharine AJR pie is a little worship music cherry on top.

It's very American.
Just a little too glossy on all sides for me. Like that episode of Spongebob where he becomes 'normal'.
I can't find any element of their music I like. I dislike all of it.
|
| |
How is this “very American”?
|
| |
Are we seriously calling this clusterfuck AI, 2012 cartoon network style drawing, color bomb "good artwork" on this page?
|
| |
Literally none of those artwork criticisms are valid lol
Why do people hate this band with such passion?
|
| |
“Why do people hate this band with such passion?”
pathetic lyricism for children, extremely annoying and grating songs
its pretty simple really

'pretentious artists that don’t know you exist'
all this time i thought all the artists saw our reviews : (

Oh Mort. ='( It's going to be OK, dude.
HipHop - Most American album going. If I think American ad pop music, it sounds like this.
I watched a video of one of the chaps, the one with the glasses. He was describing what they like to go for in their music - big, loud mixes with a lot of elements at once. That's what they want their art to be about but it's not for me.
|
| |
'If I think American ad pop music, it sounds like this.'
this is very accurate
|

You know, I've never heard of anyone I know listening to this group but they seem to have a lot of fans. Probably popular in America but I don't think they get as much radio play elsewhere.
Just to add. Not here to Diss anyone who likes AJR. Taste is a personal thing. It's just not my dig.

I don’t even like this group. Outside of 1-2 tracks I think they’re forgettable.
The hate for it is over the top though. It’s average pop music. It’s not like the industry is filled with geniuses. Name a modern pop song that is any better than “Burn the House Down.”
“AJR bad” has become a meme. It’s a way to signal your faux sophistication.

"Name a modern pop song that is any better than “Burn the House Down.” "
just from the past month

Kind of an apples and oranges comparison
I could see why you would prefer that song.
But Burn the House Down is not a bad song either.

The lyrics are sometimes a little cringe (talking about Twitter) but if you get over that it’s a very fun pop song with pretty good lyrics. Very far from being the “worst band of all time.” And you know it.

"The new TOP album is the best pop album in years. Horribly underrated. Tyler Joseph has some of the best vocals in the business. Songwriting and production is excellent. It’s extremely catchy but has lyrics filled with substance. 5."
omg you will just love the newest Sleep Token album to pieces

Youre good at childish sarcasm but not much else.
I think a lot of the hatred of TOP is mediocre people like yourself jealous that they have what you lack (skill, wit, maturity, etc).
They’re a great band.

There's no real conspiracy here. I don't think AJR are average. I really don't like what they do. Not that they're bad artists. They make music with intentionality and it reaches who it needs to reach. I'm not that person, though.
Also, I don't like 'Burn the House Down'. I could think of loads of pop songs I like more than that.

They have 6 albums and they’re all rated ~1.5 on this site, making them one of the lowest rated band in music history.
They are not that bad. It is just a way for the cool kids to signal how cool they are by talking about how TERRIBLE this average pop music is.
And then this same site worships extremely mediocre and pretentious pop music like “To Pimp a Butterfly” like it’s a masterpiece. Really it’s just another attempt at being “cool” by supporting certain artists and laughing at others. There is no objective quality difference between Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, and AJR. It’s all cheesy pop.
