yeah, well also considering you are a fan of more extreme metal and this has a bit of a progressive flair, I dont find it all that surprising that you dont love the album. I mean, compared to Dark Tranquility, they seem a bit tame.

WTF? I love progressive metal more then anything else, just not these guys (whom I hardly consider very progressive). You want progressive metal, listen to Agalloch, Opeth, Enslaved, Orphaned Land, Isis, My Dying Bride etc. all are way more progressive then Mastodon and for the most part hardly more heavy.

Mastodon aren't really Stoner Metal at all, so it's not really fair to compare them to Stoner bands. Admittedly there are glimpses of Stoner-ish stuff on this album, but as an actually genre classification for the band, it's pretty off.

hmmm, sorry, I just glanced at your profile quickly when I came to that. I actually listened to Isis' new album and was not impressed at all. It just seemed to kind of build up to nothing really interesting. and if you have yet to listen to Sleeping Giant, give it a listen. Its far and by more progressive and interesting than anything I heard on In the Absense of Truth.

Edit to Kyle: I agree, but only under the pretence of my limited knowlege of the genre. This Message Edited On 09.11.06

This is truly an amazing review. This album may have finally turned the corner, and is now probably going to get a 3.5. It just seems like Mastodon lacked the riffs on this album. Iron Tusk, Blood and Thunder... those had great riffs. A bit too much progressive wankery here, but still a great album.

This album lacked great riffs? What about the excellent punk riffs in "The Wolf Is Loose"? What about the great, emotional opening riffs in "This Mortal Soil"?

And don't even get me started on "Sleeping Giant"

This album had great riffs, and is their best album to date. It beats Leviathan by a very short margin, though.

So I'll be having this review deleted, and I probably wont rewrite it, even though I feel its one of my better ones.

I tried listening to this album the other day, and I honestly had trouble making my way through it. Go figure.
