The problem with the album is that it isn't different or interesting at all.

And here I was... Thinking EVERYONE loved this album.

I really, really like this album after owning it for three days. At first listen, I thought it sucked, but it grew on me alot.

I disagree with your opinion, but I can see your points, some of them. Well written review though.

p.s. - I agree with the people that say they've done nothing new here, though.

I do with they would have progressed more.

Every album will have people who like it and people that don't. I, for one, like this album for the following reasons:

I am a drummer, and Brann is the f'in man.

I used to be a pothead, and this band WILL blow your mind if you listen to them when you are ripped. Guaranteed.

I've been listening since Remission.

Whenever I start getting tired of the same old crap in metal, I listen to this band and it gives me hope, because they aren't just going chugga chugga chugga Booom, chugga chuggg chugg chuggg blam (I'm looking at you, Lamb of God.) While I disagree with the name "saviors of metal" (who said metal needed saving?), they are one of the best modern metal bands on the scene today.

Not to insult any of the detractors, but most people who seem to dislike this album come off to me as if they have no idea how to contextualize this stuff. Its like they listen to it, say "I don't understand this, therefore BAD!" And THEN they start looking for "objective" reasons it is bad, like the vocals, the guitarists, the drummer. I am sorry, but if you think that the drumming on this album is bad, you are on crack. Maybe you should stick to Ac/Dc and Blink-182 if you can't handle a little jazz in your metal.

Iluvatar, thank you so much. I've always thought Brann overplayed. People hear

something that's fast and kinetic and they think it's amazing. Albiet, he is really

talented and I like the jazz influence, but he really does overplay, and it often works

against the band which is not a good thing.

That said, I really like this album. This Message Edited On 09.18.06

When I first listened to this a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was alright but like the new DJ Shadow album, I keep coming back to it.

I don't really think there is a whole lot of over-drumming on this album, in fact, a lot of times Dailor keeps a steady beat going (at least more often than on their past releases). Besides, since so much rhythm is best in the guitars and bass, it generally gives liscence for some drumming with a little extra flair.

There is also a broader sound on this album and I really don't see how anyone could say that there are no hooks on this album. The majority of the riffs are insanely catchy despite being repetitive. Plus, the vocals are more melodic than ever.

I tried listening to Colony of Birchmen not too long ago and had to shut it off halfway through. I seriously do not feel like getting into these guys after that

Well they don't normally sound like that so I don't think that basing your entire opinion of Mastodon on that song is a very wise choice. Listen to Sleeping Giant or The Wolf is Loose.

Of course it's not a wise choice, I just happened to open the wrong can of worms on that song. I'll give one of those two songs a listen.

It takes a while to get into it,and it is BY NO MEANS WHATSOEVER the best metal album of 2006,but Blood Mountain is definitley a must have for any extreme metal fan.

Yep, I hate how this grew on me again. The only songs I really dislike are Hunters of the Sky, Colony of Birchmen, This Mortal Soils, and the intro to Capillarian Crest. Aside from that, and the goofy lyrics, its a great album and stuff.
