Brand New fans listen to Your Favourite Weapon for a week, Deja Entendu for a month and The Devil and God for the rest of their life.

This album is simply stunning. It's so different from DE and YFW and better for it. Jesse's perfectionism really paid off in this one.

I think this band is pretty important for music atm. I love this album, but theres something about the flow of it that annoys me. I love it up to track 6 and the rest is just sorta there.

You don't love Welcome to Bangkok, Archers, or Handcuffs?

I think Welcome to Bangkok is almost like a break in the album. Album gets pretty badass from that point forward

give me an argument. thats the spirit!!
ok, here goes.
Brand New is generally defined in the rock/alternative rock genre, which they have accomplished well with their consistent set of tunes that have emotional connections and homages to traditional structures. They triumph in this manner very well in "the Devil and God...". These are my reservations...
My argument is this: for a 'rock' album, Brand New managed to put together a great set of singles comparable to Muse's "H.A.A.R.P" insomuch as there is little connection between each track. That's not bad necessarily. What is bad is the final resting point for this album does not exist.
There is no summation of the entire experience as general rock albums have the ability to achieve (ending of Sgt. Pepper's to even the ending in OK Computer), in fact, this album just barely manages to end with another slightly enjoyable track that, sadly, lacks any statement. Like a sentence without punctuation.
Nuclear bombs like Jesus, You Won't Know, and especially Luca all standout as having the ability to be a cornerstone to any rock album, but somehow get lost in the shuffle to a poorly edited collection of otherwise interesting tracks. 4-4.5 depending on the individual's experience, but to offer a 5 and be on the shelf with the best we've ever heard would be a minor tragedy.
Your turn, GO!

Excellent work, gentlemen.
Just for my two cents' worth, it's the little things that bring this record from getting full marks.

within the idea of it being an "emotional rollercoaster", much of the continuity does come to light. You are right, you have smoldered my 'poor ending' argument in the sense that "handcuffs" does make a better ending due to its contrast.
What I still am odds with when it comes to this album is the utterly missed opportunities between tracks to tie in such impressive songs. The foil to this album would be, lets say, Colors by BTBAM.
The different ends, feelings they conjure, and the realms they jump to are just as dramatic as "the devil..." but they musically tie it together into something comparable to a genre orgy. Brand New at times is so caught up in being themselves and not giving two ****s about what anyone else thinks that they didn't realize that approach is a Bob Dylan take on music.
The difference between Bob Dylan and Brand New though is that Bob could only be himself, thus creating an intense theme throughout each album as he, himself, changed. Brand New just managed to do what they do best with no full realization of the final purpose for this great work of art.

opinion mixed with facts to reach conclusions. this is what i love about this site... real fugging ideas and intelligent conversation about the one thing i love nearly as much as relationships i have: music
final verdict: i rate from a general perspective, you rate from a personal angle. we both are right in our own right, ha.
