It's bad enough Wikipedia tried comparing Mercury Rev to hippy trippy Flaming Lips lol (don't tell Fripp I said that)
But they still seem overall interesting to me, so I want to check more of their sutff

It's one of those classic 'the band nearly went their separate ways, personal issues aplenty, let's give it one last go and see if we can cut it' albums.
And they pulled it off.

If you hate Flaming Lips you might dislike it. They're very different imo but people do compare them.
I do like the Flips, I'd have thought some of that bands output you'd dig :/

I like a couple songs I've heard form them, but Wayne Coyne's entire personality is kind of repugnant and it really makes me never in the mood to give them a fair shot

The documentary Fearless Freaks casts them in a better light, humble origins and just really creative (if drug riddled)
Some of the early stuff is more experimental than this album, and very noisy. I wouldn't write them off entirely.

Both Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev have been through so many stages - underground to (in the case of FL) as mainstream as you can get

What were they thinking when they wrote Girlfren? Ugh

I think it's 90% supposed to be a joke

"It's bad enough Wikipedia tried comparing Mercury Rev to hippy trippy Flaming Lips lol (don't tell Fripp I said that)"
there are so many things I could say
but whatever
the comparison is an apt one considering they have had members in the Lips
I could say something about you saying the Lips as "hippy trippy" and how that's all wrong
but
whatever

but please do watch Fearless Freaks
Wayne is very, very different now from the Wayne in that movie(due to his recent coke intake, midlife crisis and general obnoxiousness at 56 years of age)
He really fell apart when his wife left him (which was his fault btw), and he hasn't been the same since.

Fearless Freaks is such a cool documentary (and the Flaming Lips are untouchable)

Super interesting jazz experimentation at times. Bronx Cheer is one of their best pop tracks too.

This album is a mixed big, unfortunately it's also of mixed quality lol
Yerself destroys this, but See You on the Other Side actually also does.
Check See You on the Other Side guys it's better than this, although worse than Yerself.

Wtf is “Girlfren” doing here. Most of the rest of this is very good but def at least a tier below Yerself.

“Girlfren” is here to be irritating and to keep this from being a 4/5
